I didn't know where to put this so I hope it will be ok here.

I just wondered what size rug would fit a 16hh thoroughbred? I know it will probably be hard considering you can see the horse but just a rough guess would be fine.

Thanks

It's impossible to guess rug size , you just measure from the centre of the chest along the side of the body to a point level with where the tail starts.

My 16.2 TB took a 6'3" rug, he was quite short backed.

Definitely get a tape of some sort and have another person to help you. One person needs to stand at your horses chest with the tape dead center in the middle of the chest and the other person needs to wind it around the body. You want to make sure to wind the tape over the broadest part of the shoulder, down his barrel around his buttocks and end at the center of the tail. Make sure your tape is not stiff but soft so it can mold around the body. Once you have your measurement, it is okay to get a size larger just to be okay. My mare is very largely built. She is about 15.2 hands and is an Appy. She is pretty broad and measured between 79" and 80". I went ahead and ordered a blanket from Countrysupply.com in the size of and 81". I have not gotten it yet but I am confident that it will fit well. Hope this helps!! :)

Also ... if you can find people who have rugs already and are willing to let you try them on your horse it will give you a good idea of how different company's rugs fit. I wanted Horseware for Saff but they were just the wrong shape, she ended up in Masta (not as nice but a LOT cheaper) :) Oh, and she's 15.1hh and in a 6'3" or a 6'6" so you just can't tell by height I'm afraid :(

Thanks for the replies the thing is the rug is not for my horse(as I don't have one!) but it is for my friend. I have seen one advertised and I was wongering whether to tell her or not. Because I don't want to sound really stupid by suggesting a rug that really wouldn't fit.

Edited to say: I am stupid I can just ask her, my goodness I really am thick :o
