I tried putting my girths and headcollars into a fabric bag when I washed them, but they came out just as filthy  . I brush my girth and numnah down before they go in to the wash to stop the hair from simply attacking everything else, but wondered how I should wash these sorts of things to a/ stop them damaging my washing machine, and b/actually clean them! I've also got Jake's old lead rope from his last owner, which is filthy and desperately wants a wash, but I'm worried about putting it in the machine with the big metal clasp on it (which is daft, because until we found our "rug cleaning woman" I was simply shoving rugs in on a 30 degree wash, buckles and all! ).

How does everyone else clean these sorts of things, and keep them looking new?

we used to put all the buckles/metal bits into a pillow case and tie it round to hold it in and let the area that needed washing free into the machine. so the buckles don't bash the machine.

i'm not very good at explaining sorry :)
