View Full Version : Lots of wee's...

I have a foal (about 6 months old) in my stable and he was having a wash the other day and I noticed that while he was stood on the wash stand (about 1/2 an hour) he did about 5 wee's.

To me that's not natural... The wee was quite clear, not noticabley yellow. I'm worried for the little boy as he's only young and is full of life!

Anyone got any ideas what could be wrong and what needs to be done!

Thanks.... :)

A while ago one of my mares was peeing a lot and it was always very clear.

My vet said that she wasn't concetrating the urine enough (in the kidney? in the bladder?) before peeing. She told me to give her lots of extra salt for a while, and that would fix it.

So I did, and it did, and no more problem...

But drinking LOTS and peeing very very much can also be a symptom of real kidney disfunction. Might want to have a vet check it out.

I wouldn't worry too much if the foal was only weeing excessively when on the wash stand. Urine acts on two levels -
1) as a way to get rid of waste products
2) to scent mark a territory

It sounds to me like it is marking a territory rather than demonstrating a bladder/kidney problem.

Was the foal producing relatively little urine regularly when on the wash stand? What is the horse when loose in the field - does it urinate 'normally' or at the rate you are describing?

Thanks guys...

In reply, the foal wee's a lot anyway, he needs his box cleaning out thoroughly everyday. He's now living in a smaller paddock, so that it's not so much work for the grooms, however his weeing still continues!

He has a playmate about 2 month younger than him, so it could be marking his territory, but I'll have the vet check it out to be on the safe side!

Thanks for the advice!!!
