View Full Version : Sarcoids and failed vetting

My 3yr old coloured cob has been vetted today and failed. :(
About a month ago a lump popped up which after looking up loads of pics I really though was nothing more than a wart. I didn't really know the thing existed on him until after I'd advetised him as he has been for schooling and loan. I told the prospective buyer about it beforehand , and agreed to go ahead so no worries there.
The vet can't be sure that its a sarcoid but chances are it is and suggests a biopsy to find out. So, a couple of questions:
- does anyone know the cost of a biopsy?
- how are they done? is a sample taken or is the whole thing removed?
- if the liverpool cream works does it scar afterwards?
It was a vet from Liverpool uni who vetted him so it would be realatively easy to go to them for treatment.
In my opinion (and the buyer's) he is still worth the money as an all rounder but not as a show horse as she wanted and he failed on nothing else, the vet commented that he was a super chap. What do you think, should I drop his price? See him on here, do a search for Broadsheet www.colouredcontacs.co.uk

If that is the only thing he failed the vetting on and you can establish that its definitely a sarcoid, then I wouldn't drop the price too much - I mean, if the vet said he was a super chap that can only be a good thing! Just a shame she wanted him as a show horse, cos if he's scarred etc it will have to reflect in the price. I tried to look at the picture on the link but it wouldn't let me  darned computer of mine.......... :D

Thanks Trewsers, have been reading your thread.
Try this, might take you straight there

Its such a bummer, she was a really nice lady. She's going to send me a copy of the vetting so I can show it to anyone else who may be interested.
I had two people phone and say he's very reasonably priced - I suppose he was for a show cob, just about right for an all round type of chap with a (possible) sarciod perhaps though

When Lili grew her sarcoid she had a punch biopsy done. It was really quick - vet took a sample of the sarcoid while she stood, haltered. Lili's very good, but your vet might suggest a mild sedative if he thinks your cob might react. A lot depends on where it is.
The cream... cost varies. It depends on what Liverpool recommends. Lili had two pots - one 3/4 strength and one 1/2 strength. They were (I think) £65 per pot. The biopsy and callout came to around £80 I think. The biggest expense is actually applying the cream - it has to be done by a vet, so you'd either have to arrange to take the horse to him, or pay a callout for each treatment, or have the vet take him in to hospital. In the event Lili's vanished by itself so all we had to pay for was the biopsy.
Liverpool do now insist the vets pay for the cream before it's sent out though - don't know if that'll make a difference. My poor vet ended up stuck with cream he couldn't use after Lili's sarcoid disappeared.

Thanks Chev, re the callout for applying the cream - dare I ask how many applications Lili had?

None, in the end! :D She was supposed to have about eight, if I remember right - eight hours apart, then twelve, then 24, then 48... it was pretty complicated. But the schedule does vary - at the same time our vet was treating another horse, who only had four applications of one pot of 1/2 strength cream. Much easier and cheaper. It depends on what Liverpool recommend after analysing the biopsy.

I have raved before and will do again about the sarcoid that my boy had, which was cleared up for good (fingers crossed) with oil therapy. It was totally natural and very reasonably priced and worked amazingly well. I was a total sceptic til I saw it work first-hand. He had an olive sized bleeding nasty sarcoid on his neck, which used to rub on the reins every time he was ridden. A full course of treatment lasted about 4 months but the sarcoid shrank and then disappeared and has not grown back 2 years later. There isn't even a scar.
I persuaded the owners to drop the price of Arnie by £300 when I saw he had a sarcoid. I was happy to take the gamble as I was confident that the oil therapy would get rid of it. I justified the drop in price as I said I would use the difference to pay for the treatment, which I did. But saying that, he was bought for dressage rather than showing so perhaps the sarcoid would be of less significance and less likely to deter potential owners??

When I had Saff's sarcoid 'Liverpooled' the vet came every other day for 5 visits :) It ended costing about £150 in total in the end but still hadn't dropped off after 6 weeks. In the meantime I put her on Global Herbs Sarc-Ex and Restore and after a couple of months it just dropped off never to be seen again. Unfortunately she's growing another one now, ****** typical
augermoon - what's the 'oil therapy' that you're talking about? I'd be interested to know some more about it.

Bay Mare,
Have posted a link to a previous thread where I wrote about the oil therapy (is getting late and am too tired to type lots now  but can write more in work's time tomorrow if needs be :D ) If you want any more info, feel free to PM me. I was just so impressed with the oil therapy and would use it again in a shot. And the fact that it was all natural was a major added bonus.

Meant to say, I referred to this technique previously as aromatherapy. Having researched the difference between that and oil therapy, it is clearly oil therapy that was used in Arnie's case. Either way, the results speak for themselves :D :D

Aloe Vera gel does reportedly have some success. I have access to a vet I could ask if you like - he's researched Aloe and it's uses for a number of years.
I haven't used it myself and don't know anyone who has, so can't speak from personal experience, but I could probably find you some information on it :) .

Seems to be like sweet itch treatment - different ones are effective for different horses
I'm very interested in the oil therapy, it sounds promising for future horses.
I have an update on the situation - Ty didn't actually fail the vetting on the sarcoid, it was more of an observation which for obvious reasons the buyer couldn't ignore. I didn't like to think of him having failed.
The next piece of good news is that I had a lady who asked for second refusal, I have told her about the possible sarcoid and it doesn't bother her as she wants an all-rounder for hacking and local showing. So, fingers crossed that she doesn't change her mind he's off to his new home in Aberystwyth on Saturday :)
