What is the best way to keep my piebald mare's tail clean. I use ordinary shampoo at the moment, then fabric conditioner, then proper mane and tail conditioner (I think it has silicone in it). It takes me ages to do and it still always seems to have that "hint of yellow" in it - how can I get it back to the original white?!? :D

The yard I bought my coloured cob from used to use a laundry "blue bag" in the final rinse to bring her tail up white.

Bluing shampoo will usually do the trick. I had a similar problem with a grey horse. It usually got the stains out.

I just use washing-up liquid (not too often!) It makes the tail and feathers really white and silky.

I posted my reply on the other copy of this message, so I am just going to repeat what I said. There are special shampoos formulated for white/grey horses (Hi Ho Silver is one I know of), or get a bluing shampoo as others have said. If you want it to stay clean betweeen washes, you will most likely have to braid it and wrap it in vet wrap or put it in a tail bag.
