My friend rang me the other day as her horse Charlie as started to constantly want to rub his head on his legs whilst out hacking and also constantly snorts and sneezes and throws his head about. the YO on her yard has convinced her that Charlie is doing this because he has navicular and that she should get the vet out straight away, am I wrong to think that her YO is talking rubbish?? as i thought for one navicular was more in the foot area and that Charlie would be rather lame? He his only doing this when being ridden and not when in the field, so i suggested getting his teeth looked at as he is only 5 and we suspect his wolf teeth are emerging if he still does it after the dentist then try a nose net to rule out allergy etc.
What do you guys think?? or am i the one barking up the wrong tree?! :o

Sounds much more like an alergy to me ;)

I'd probably start with a nose net (cheap and quick), then move on to dentist/vet if no improvement. If nothing else the vet should be able to advise (from a well educated position :p) on whether they see any requirement to x-ray the feet to check for any signs of navicular.

Navicular isn't usually associated with an itchy nose and sneezing. I'm no vet, but my gut feeling is that this has nothing to do with navicular.

Only way to know what really is bothering him is a vet visit. Good luck!

It sounds like your YO is barking up the wrong tree. I would suspect the bit before Navicular, certainly allergies would far more probable then Navicular. It could be the nose band for that matter, a bit of irratation perhaps.

Angel does this because she gets sweaty under her bridle and then itchy and needs to scratch her head on her leg - its got nothing to do with navicular, I DO have a horse with navicular and those are NOT symptoms - hope that makes you feel better :)

thanks alot, ill tell my friend, im not too keen on her YO she seems to invent all sorts of injuries for the horses there!! my friend wants to move but there seems to be a real shortage of livery spaces at the moment round us. Charlie has started to drop a bit of weight now the grass has gone and the YO doesnt see the need for him to have extra feed!! plus when the weather is really horribly raining she wouldnt let my friend put rugs on him when he was cold, i really feel sorry for charlie and my friend

The net sounds a good idea, he probably has an allergy. This time of year all sorts of breathing problems start up. The fields getting cut etc:
