Can anybody recommend a good horsey sunblock ? There were three very pink noses there to greet us when we went to muck out the field last night.... :)

hello!
I used Boots kids sunblock last year - it is a really thick white cream, the type that never really rubs in. That worked a treat. if you buy a product designed for horses it will cost you a bomb and i reckoned that kids stuff must be just as good.
bye!

I agree with Sarah- we use people sunblock, and it works jsut as well but costs less. Just get the highest SPF you can find, and slather it on every day.

I use kids sunblock (factor 50) for both me and my horse! Its worth bearing in mind that the regulations governing testing of products to be used on children will be far more stringent than anything which is purely for animal use, so if you have a horse with particularly sensitive skin, childrens products are probably the way to go. Sure they won't have actually been tested on horses, but anything which doesn't bring a reaction on a childs skin probably won't do your horse any harm!!

Hi everyone - thanks for the advice so far. We have been using kid's sunblock to date but found that as soon as they buried their heads in the grass, it wiped right off again !
However, Sarah's reply sparked a memory with me - we bought the Boots Soltan stuff for our children a few years ago - yes it is extremely thick and doesn't rub in easily at all. In fact, it's so thick we gave up trying to squeeze it out of the tube and bought something a little runnier, so I'm off to rummage in the dark recesses of the bathroom cabinet when I finish typing this to see if I can find it again and put it to better use.
Anna C. - what brand do you buy that's Factor 50 ? I need that myself, never mind the horses.
Having said all that tho', as I type it's absolutely chucking it down with rain here in Gloucester........does anyone know a good equine wellington manufacturer ? :D

The Factor 50 stuff is by Banana Boat. They do special baby sunblock which is very mild and a kiddies sunblock which is (supposedly) waterproof and very thick. This is the one I use on Harry's nose as it doesn't seem to rub off so quickly. Its not the cheapest but if you're just using it on a nose one tube should last a longish time. I've been using it on me too every summer for the last few years and it seems pretty effective. I'm one of those unfortunate people who never tans, the skin just goes red and peels off.. attractive eh???

I used a water proof sunblock that had the highest SPF I could find. For sunburned noses, use Aloe Vera. It works wonders.
