As a new rider myself, I have found that Western Riding is the only way to learn. It teaches complete control of the horse through education of both horse and rider and works to develop a partnership between you and your horse.
I began riding at the age of thirty something and the confidence that a Western Saddle and Western trained horse gives you is invaluable to those like me who feel an awful long way off the ground when sat on a horse!
Watch this site for an article I am writing for Mike on behalf of the Western Equetrian Society or post a reply if you are interested in this relaxed and friendly wayo ride.
All Best Wishes
