Well my new loan horse is doing really well. She has been schooled on the falt and i am now getting her into jumping. She is an ex-hunter so all her striding(sp) is wrong and she charges at the jumps. I've been schooling her for a few weeks. We are still at the trotting pole stage. Any tips on making her trot them and not jump them :p She is doing really well really lol.
Before any one asks there is a very very experienced person helping me :)
I popped her over a few tiny jumps today and she cleared them by miles. :D
Just wondering if anyone has any tips to help me and give me advise on anything i can do with her to improve her?
She is perfect on the flat and will do anything you ask of her. Weve just had a brilliant ride and I'm soo pleased with her

glad to hear your doing well, i have the same prob with trotting poles and jumping them, shadow considers anything that is raised off the floor a jump!!! Even kirbs!!!
Bless him, so what i did was set out the poles on the floor, close together, i usually use 4, will see if i can draw a pic of what i do as twill be easier!!!!

ok so pait isnt working lets seee...... this should be interesting......

ok so the 0= blocks and the ----= a pole
so the end of eveyother is raised, make the distance 4 lil feet paces so that horsey cannot jump it, like this...... heres another dodgy pic.....

so that the end of the foot touches the other!!!
try this and see if it works!!!
Sorry about the strange pics!!!

Thankyou. Shadow Dancer I shall try that tommorow. :D .
Kedwards, I put them in the centre of the school 4 and a half feet and a half feet apart (I'm size 5). Do you think i should make them wider or narrower?

I actually tried that out myself awhile ago as I tend to get the same problem. He considers anything raised above the ground as a jump.
Anyways, he figured out they were too close, so he jumped the lot in one bound.......

How many do you set? You want to avoid setting up just 2 trot-poles, since it looks too much to a horse like you are asking for a jump. Start with one until he's going over it as though it isn't even there, then go right to 3 or 4.
While you can alter with the distance between them, it's difficult to know how to adjust them until he is at least trying to trot over them.
