I had a great lesson last night. Not least because the instructor (who I haven't had before) said that my position (esp my legs) were good - which was not true 6 months ago so I'm getting somewhere. My biggest problem is my hands, but I had a already decided that I needed to work on them next, so at least I'm getting to a stage where I know what the problem is. :)
She also showed me how I should put my leg behind the girth. Previously I have been bending my leg back from the knee, in a totally incorrect fashion. We were doing decreasing circles and I coudl see the difference immediately. However, I forgot to ask about moving my outside leg back to signal canter. Obviously I'm not really using it, just sliding it back - but do I do it in the same way as she showed me?

Yes you do. Leg positioning should always come from the hip not the knee.
