Hi guys,
Out driving yesterday had my first real road accident. Dunno what happened, we had a lorry up behind us, tractor and queue of traffic on other side of road and sheep in a field on left. Pulling into lay-by to let lorry go past and dog in back of car in the tractor queue barked right next to us out of car window. Banjo overshot the lay-by and we ended up crashing through the undergrowth and into a ditch that we didnt even know was there. Poor little girlie panicked and started kicking back at the vehicle to get it off her and bashed her leg. My groom jumped out ripping her jodhs in the process. I was completely trapped in the cart and had to break branches to get out.
Luckily one (only one mind  ) of the drivers in the queue jumped out and held Banjo so I could get her out of the traces and he bravely hung onto her as she plunged and pranced around with eyes like saucers.
We're all ok. only a broken breastcollar and bent trace hook on the cart and ripped up jodhs and bruised leg on groom. Banjo seems fine, just a little tender around the bum.
Bit of a shock but I guess even the most fearless steady pone can just decide 'I've had enough of this now' and make the wrong decision. I'm just glad she is ok and she didnt run into the road, if it had been a normal grass verge after the lay-by we probably would have been fine.
Will have to de-sheep her as she seemed to blame them entirely for her troubles,as we stood waiting for our rescue lorry she was snorting at the sheep in the field with eyes on stalks.
Makes me appreciate how I take her steadiness for granted really :o

Glad youre both ok, thank goodness there was one driver who had the sense to try and help, its awful when youre in the middle of a crisis and all onlookers can do is 'tsk' and roll their eyes

At least you're all safe and well and a big "well done" to the single solitary person who came to help you. What would have happened had it been a more serious accident?? Aren't the public useless :D

So glad you are all OK!! What a scary episode, we had a friend who was out with his Belgian cross put to a sleigh and he was really traffic safe, but when the snowplow went by the horse simply leapt into the ditch with sleigh and all! Like yours, everyone was OK but shaken up.

Aoweee! Scary stuff.

Well let's hope that's the last for a long time, in a way it was lucky she went for the drain rather than the traffic.

When I have done a similar thing the horses tend to just sit still and wait for me to get them out of the tangle. She could have been worse, well done, you got her out without dely and further problems.

Hope your legs have stopped wobbling by now! What a scary few moments. It is bad enough when a ridden pony spooks/bolts, but even worse when you are driving I imagine. Well done to your groom as well :)

Treacle hopes Driving Miss Banjo feels better soon.

And HH hopes HO and LW will be causing mischief as soon as they darn their jhods.

I'm pleased the only accident I had was to be tipped out of the cart as my pony shot off down a pathway. Of course you managed to have a good groom with you which is always good. Well done Giveitago. Mine decided to jump out and left the horse going off on her own  Glad we had no ditches

Pleased everyone is ok and that Banjo will not find the cart too frightening next time she goes out
