what does one do with a little pony that grabs the bit and runs for life if you permit it to go any faster than a slow canter?
we are having a slight problem as a girl that comes otu riding has a new pony share as her last horse was put to sleep last month and now she is riding this phsyco pony that just wont stop, even when all the other horses have stopped the pony just keeps on running and not everywhere has the space to bring the pony round in circles! sorry i have to laugh as i am saying this because its really funny to watch this tiny little pony run past a big horse..but off cours ei woudlnt be laughing if the girl was sacred...the girl finds it frustrating more than anything..would a flash noseband be the thing seeing as the pony either grabs the bit or opens it mouth ? what else can one do?

i think the pony needs more schooling at home, to become more responsive to the riders aids, a flash may help but i dont think she sound be riding out on this pony its really dangerous what if it cantered out into a road.

there are no roads that the pony could canter out in.
When we ride out with this little nutter pony we go across grassland on the top of a ehm..mountain!:D
i am actually wondering though because this girl isnt the only girl that rides the pony..there is another girl and i will ask this girl next time if the other girl has a problem because she has been riding the pony longer.
I am not sure htough if it also has to do with the fact tha tthe girl is always trying to pull the pony back when following us in canter!? because afterwards she moans about her sore hands form trying to hold the pony back. I mean if soemone was constantly pulling my mouth back at force i would take the bit in my mouth and run off with them!
hehe it is such a pretty little thing though...my horse tried to eat it the other day..just lunged at it with ears back and tried to grab hold of the poor little thing.

dont canter around, make it walk where you normally canter

I've been told to alternately squeeze left rein/ right rein on horses that grab the bit and go too fast. I am not sure though, if it's the right thing to do on an extreme case like that?!
It worked surprisingly well on just regular "run offs"...

Would he possibly be putting his tounge above the bit, so that the rider has no control?

A horse at the barn I ride at use to put her tounge over the bit, and the rider would have no control, but now she is ridden in a flash noseband and she doesnt do that anymore.

What kind of bit is used on the pony??

hm mwell everythime we go out we ride a different way and cante rin different places so the pony isnt actually being cantered in the same place everytime...it is just a little speedy gonzales!
alternately squeezing reins..i wonde rif anyoen has suggested that too her? because i have to do this when my horse ehm..runs awa y with me..very rare thing but it has happened once or twice.
the bit? i think she said it was a loose ring snaffle or it could have been a french link loose ring snaffle.
well i thought that maybe riding the pony in a flash noseband would help especailly as it keeps the mouth shut.

Ya a flash keeps their mouth shut, but just make it tight enough, because I was leading a mare witha flash, and she still bit me, but if he cant open his mouth then he cant get the bit inbetween his teeth, or at least thats what I would expect.

And the termm for pulling on alternate reins is see sawing, and should be used only when the pony takes off. Also when I rode a pony who would barely do anything I wanted, when he tried to follow or take of, well its hard to explain, by the way, the l's are the reins, and the G's are hands!

Take one hand, well you know how the extra reins hang down? well with one hand grab the extra reins close to the other hand, anf th same with the other, so that there is like a loop, and then you pull back, its called bridging, but if you want a better explaination, PM me! lol

hehe i know what you are talking about
i was just wondering if people had any methods for slowing down LITTLE speedy ponies becaus ei myself was last on a pony when i was 5 and since them have only ridden dressage and showjumper horses and ehm...they are somehow not quite the same as a fast little pony. :D
I just wanted to know if a flash would be a good idea and what one can do to encourage the pony to slow down because lal th emoethods that have worked on my friend horse and my horse do not under any circumstances work ont his little devil of a pony

Hello. I used to have the same problem (only I was on a HORSE!). I put the horse into a martingale & kimberwick bit (at the same time) and it worked. If the pony droppes his head use a martingale!!! Put it one hole shorter than the pony would usually go in. Also, the kimberwick prevents him from opening him mouth as much. This helped me a TON. Hope it helps you, too! :D -HG01
