There are true white horses, but they are uncommon. The term white is used for horses who have pink skin (unpigmented), while horses with white hair but dark skin are called grey.

You can get white horses with pink skin, but they are very rare and usually don't live very long and shouldn't be confused with cremellos or perlinos which also have pink skin but have a slight cream tinge to their hair.

There are also "dominant whites" which are born white and don't grey out (they do not have the greying gene), and have dark skin and eyes. These are very rare too.

Generally most of the time when you see what looks to be a completely white horse it will be a grey that has turned completely white over time, usually this only happens by the time a horse is aged, say 15 years or more, although it happens differently with each grey.
