:o

A tad embarrassed to say this.. but hey guess most of you have been there!

Was working on my diagonals and getting them right in rising trot - tried looking down to watch the shoulder rise - found myself bouncing around and before I knew it I was going... going.. gone :o :D . I resigned myself to the fall when Kapella's mane was next to my face! and relaxed into the fall.. fell on my back between horse and fence. Was just glad when I lost sight of Kapella's legs!

Dusted myself off, patted kapella and took her out to re-mount and get back to the job at hand! Am grateful to say that I got the diagonals right then! ;) without looking! :p

Am better going clockwise though..

Am back at the stables on Thursday doing a couple of hours 'course' on horsecare. :) can't wait!

Someone said to me when i first joined that riding is addictive as is this forum.. they were right on both counts!

Wow, I'm glad you took that fall without any injury. :)

I hope my first is that easy on my body!

BTW, working on diagonals on lesson six seems like very fast progress to me.

Oh poor you

Well done for getting right back on. I have been riding for 3 years and have also been known to lose my balance slightly when checking my diagonal. It does get easier and eventually you just know by feel that it is right.

Glad you're not suffering :D ! Its sooo easy to lose balance at the beginning (well it is 18 months down the line :p )

Thanks everyone! :D just one of those things!
I was getting the rising trot ok, but today just didn't feel right and that lead us to diagonal's - I'll just have to remember not to look down! hehe

No aches or anything so was lucky.

Glad your first fall hasn't put you off Purple Hugs and that you haven't suffered any aches and pains. :)

;) I don't think anything could put me off at the moment! I know rome wasn't built in a day and I can see a real difference in my riding so that helps.
I was shaking a little getting back on but it was adrenaline (spell check) - definately NOT Fear! :D

I'm glad your first fall was a (more or less) positive experience. That's probably the best thing that could have happened! :p My first fall was nasty and set me back, psychologically, at least a month or two! At least now you know you've gotten the first fall out of the way!

wow, diagonals in 6 lessons, I've been riding 6 months (time flies)and have only just started diagonals.
Luckily haven't fallen yet (touch wood) but am just starting to jump and canter, so a fall is going to be pretty unavoidable.
well done for not letting it get you down :p !

errr ok beginning to wonder if maybe I've explained diagonals wrong!

We were just working on my rising trot being on the correct diagonal... is that the same thing as working on diagonals do you think? :o

Making sure your on the correct diagonal, and doing diagonals are different things. I understood that you were checking your diagonal. Your fall was very lucky, and i'm glad you weren't set back.

My first fall was 2 falls on the same day. I fell off from a spook while we were cantering, and I fell on my shoulder, dislocating it. Got back on, and fell off again when she spooked at the other gate. - At that point no one was getting me back on. i kicked the floor and was ready to leave, But they finally dragged me back onto the horse and I walked her, terrifying.

That set me back several months and even now I still do not canter

Falling off is the one thing I am not looking forward to in my return to riding! But I am glad to hear it was not a bad fall for you, and that you were able to continue streight away.

Im so glad your first fall wasn't bad :) .when i got back into riding after several years i was dreading falling off , due to past experiences, and i used to worry about it all the time.when i did have my 'first' fall it was when i lost balance doing no stirrup work and fell , crashing into the fence.luckily i got back on with no fear and no pain (apart from a grazed elbow) to continue the lesson where i then manged to fall off twice more  .but i am happy to say that my confidence was not knocked at all :) .i think this was mainly because the falls were all due to my riding not due to something the pony had done.

ooh I've gone on a bit there....sorry.

how did your daughter take it ?

I think that's what's made it easier today! it was MY fault, my lack of experience and therefore it was like falling over in the street.. you get up, giggle and get on with it!

Erin was actually ok, I think my getting back on and trotting again a good few times before the end of the lesson was a good thing for her. She knew I wasn't hurt so was ok. I talked to her about it later and she said she hadn't been worried - I was up on my feet as quick as I was down mind you! hehe :D :o

Not sure any of us look forward to falling! I was pretty worried about it before it was happening and then as it happened I thought S*** here goes! not much else you can do is there..

That's almost exactly what happened to me my first (and second) fall, 'cept I landed on my right hip both times. I've heard falling twice in a row like that as a beginning rider is just one of those things that does a real number on a rider (or maybe that's just was I was told to make me feel better. :D ). It took me about 6-8 weeks of 3x a week lessons to feel confident and relax out of that crouched up protective position. You'll canter again, don't worry!

Yup my first two fall sucked... They happened in March, and now 6 months later, still not cantering - although I am beginning to learn to canter. I do jump at a trot, and sometime Bomber will canter after the fence, but I just usually bounce around until I can get him to trot once more.

I still have a fear of falling, but I think my confidence is slowly creeping up on me again - I'm antsy waiting to learn to canter and I want to jump higher then just small cross poles.

When I was a nipper, they used to say you had to have seven falls to be a true rider.

Guess that would make me a true rider many times over then!!!

Glad you're OK

Nice hot bath and plenty radox!!! :D

Having had many a fall myself in my 18 years  , im glad you havent been fased by it. Well done you for getting back on.
But remember if you ever fall and dont feel right or are dizzy/sore do not get back on at all.
The old saying of you have to get straight back on is fine but you can injure yourself and not know until a few hours later so take a few minutes to gather yourself and make sure you are not dizzy or sore before getting back on.

Just out of interest, Purple Hugs, at which stables in Herts are you having your lessons? And at least you've got that first fall out of the way. Only seven more and you can claim to be an experienced rider (at least that's what the old wives' tale says).
Regards.

Hi... hope never to be a TRUE rider then ! ;) hehe

Will remember that Jenni, must admit I didn't feel 'knocked' or anything.. but will remember to have a physical 'check' of myself for a longer time next time...

I'm riding at Boxmoor Showjumps - on the Leighton Buzzard Road, Hemel Hempstead. A really Small stables of only 5 horses / ponies, but really nice friendly family run set up. It's changed hands in the last year or so, but as I say really friendly. The next nearest is a bigger stables but I didn't feel confident enough for that one when I started. Might move up in time if I outgrow this one.. but have a LONG way to go before that! hehe

Am doing a 2 hour course tomorrow on horse care with the RI so am looking forward to that and possibly helping out.

Yep.. bitten by the bug.. that's me! :p

Blooming heck I was born in Hemel, although I don't remember Boxmoor Showjumps, but do you know the Red Lion pub at Waterend? Well if you turn right up there there is a stables called Gaddesden Place stables, I know the old owner died a couple of years back but thats the place I first started to ride when I was 4 ..geez it only cost my parents 40p for half an hour and 60p for an hour!

and I'm 41 now .. ah the memories!!

;) Only just read your post purple hugs - glad you are ok after your fall. Think you are very brave ;) and am really pleased you got back on. I think the first fall is the worst cos once you have fallen you tend not to dread it so much.

He thought it was brilliant (and 'cool!') and got staright back on jumping again! lol! it was rather funny... My first fall was rather funny... one minute i was on the pony the next I wasnt!!! lol! :D

lol! :D I think its mane ;) lol I think most of the time when you fall of you dont realise your coming off until you cant stop it  one time when i 'fell' off it was more of a dismount than a fall because it was either that out be stuck on the horses neck...

Lucky you... that was much better than my first fall... trotting merrily around the ring when Epenet decided to stop for a bite of grass... right over the left shoulder, landed face-first... Wow, I just realized I haven't had a lesson in almost six months! Scary thought, that...
