yeah half the best horses to hack out have gone :( (including my baby tyler :() also I've been told that you have to have your own insurance to hack out now too! The ponies are lovely though :D we have to find a date that were all free and get ourselves booked in :D

I'm from Nottm too, can I suggest Kirkfields in Blidworth if you are after a nice hack - they have fantastic horses and its one the edge of Blidworth Bottoms so its all off road and on sandy tracks.

yeah i've heard stories bout kirkfields... including one in which the ex owner of a horse we used to have at fairview got chucked off and broke her leg and they made her sign a form saying it was her fault without telling her thats what it said. Fairview has just as good ponies to hack otu though but i dont think there would be enough big ones for a big group to be honest... :)

I went to Kirkfields as a birthday pressie a couple of months ago ... me and my daughter went on a hack ... I had Bruno and she had Molly, it was nice and the countryside round there is beautiful to ride in, lots of it as well ... but having said that we didn't book again :o

I used to ride molly - she can jump really well. i rode bruno once or twice too, but stopped after one day, he actually sat down whilst i was on him.

I've fell off catkin twice too lol! She was evil, and used to spook at everything, bite you all the time, and kick everything. Heidi was ok though - she was always really lazy but she had a good buck on her lol! And jerry tanked off with me in the school a few times - he was a bit fruity tooty. Thje hacking down their is really good though, and they do have some nice horses to ride. I always liked molly, holly and frieda - and they had some ex tracehorses to ride to, whicdh were ncie to learn on once you had some experience.

Fredas about 14hh isnt she?? Fjord?? i got told i was too big for her lol!! so i got put on Catkin ... now i am surprised with your comments about her, was Heidi that went to give her a good boot so she moved out of the way kicking me (not literally) out of the side door!! I then decided to take up acrobatics just after 2 spooks at a horse eating monsterous leaf!
Molly?? am racking my brains now lol. Jerry is the best 1 down there lol has the energy but gives the feeling of being safe and secure no matter what. saw Freda out in the field, looks a little like a mare called Rosa i used to ride. (same height same breed etc). Will find the pic of the 'final look', at her 1st show with me on her back! :D
Would consider going to Kirkfields for a hack, but id have to ride Jerry or Freda!! what is Freda like out on hacks?! :D can she move lol!?:D

18th Oct 2005, 06:30 PM
I rode freda, and i bet im bigger than you lol! I'm 5'6 and 10 1/2 stone. Freda is really nippy, and forward going - has a sliding gag in her mouth - i havn;t been there in a year though, so things may have changed. There was a little chestnut mare called willow who was REALLY speedy. AShe didn't know how to canter - it was trot, or flat out gallop. Heidi did used to give others a good boot. I was on her once, when she backed into a shetland  with a lil kid on it.

ponylover88
19th Oct 2005, 05:12 PM
lol yeah thats what fjords manes are meant to be like. Rosas mane was long because the person i rode her for wanted the option to be open to her new owner whether to hogg it or not. :D although, personally i loved her mane that long! :D

I still ride at Kirkfields - there's a forum now for the riders there.

I also am the website admin for their site:-

http://www.kirkfieldsequestriancentre.co.uk

It's amazing how many ppl fall off of catkins..I guess she can turn quite quickly and easily unseat riders.

Molly is an extremely good jumper, though she needs tapping up to show her who's boss.

Jerry, good for cantering, problem is stopping him once he's off. Genuine horse though

Bruno, what a character, loves to jump, hates other horses.

Personally I ride Jasper who can be a monkey at times but can really jump.

Any other horses anyone?

No didn't sadly. Havn;t done any this season, due to Murphy being lame, and never being able to get him fit enough. Did some of the amble rides but that was it :(

There are a lot of fun though, and they really do look after you there, and make sure your happy and safe - and they have a sense of humour - not overly touchy if your horse carts off, and decides to race the hunt master  (only happened my first time... - naughty horsey)

That's a shame. Know the feeling about lame horses though. Mine's now only just right.

They're crazy though so they should expect the odd bolt past the master :p Couple of my mates go on the bigger days but then quite a few are on the optional days and kids days. The hunt staff are really helpful and great we always find. A lot of the days are becoming geared towards helping people improve and bring on their horses which is brilliant.

Oh dear hope the bump wasn't too large.

There's quite a few new horses appearing recently - some of them really good for hacking, if you like Jerry then Danny Boy's a good 'un, fast and really comfy but doesn't get carried away not to listen to half halts.

Unfortunately some good ones have gone as well. Do you remember Ebony? Her canter was so smooth and balanced that you could do it without stirrups.

Ebony moved up to my old yard, and is now doing really well in eventing. I bought my horse from there about a year and a half ago - and he's a little star. She does get some nice horses in. Do you know where she gets them from, as i'm desperate for some history on him.

Wow, just found this thread. Rode at Kirkfields for a few years and still go there when I'm back from uni.
I nearly cried when I read about Willow, I loved her SOOO much, turned up one day to ride her and she was gone :( gutted and that was depsite me STILL having the grass stains up my t-shirt (note to self-do not listen to guy on large TB who tells you jump is tiny when you are on a 5 year old Welsh cob)
Also crying with laughter at the thought of heidi taking off with anyone, she's a star, my mum's thinking about getting back on a horse again after years and I recommended Heidi!!
Rode most of the others you mentioned too, in fact have a photo of freda on here
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/vickiollie/5f7fa942.bmp
There are a lot of bad rumours about that place, but most are started by other riding places. I've ridden at a lot of places around notts and they all have pros and cons. Kirkfields are quite happy to chuck people on until they fall off and let them try stuff they perhaps shouldn't, but then after having been wrapped up in cotton wool for years, thats why I went there!!

Just had a look at that forum-the pony on the first page is avia, rode her quite a lot, she's only 4, but she pulls like a tank (bear in mind she's about 14h and i'm 5ft6)!! and the spotty one on the contacts page-I'm not normally a fine horse person but he is THE nicest horse to ride. A woman in my hack group bought him, don't blame her!!
We actually nealy killed the photographer for that page, he tried to take some photos on our last canter track-the horses weren't waiting for him!!!

i have been riding at kirkfields for 8yrs and i own 2 horses there. both are great and i love them to bits. the owner mandy can have her bad days but she has never said to one of her staff that they should be paying her, i no that is a lie. and the girl who feel off n was "made" to sign a form as you said was never made to do anything she actually told someone who was riding it to get off it and let her ride it, but she cant ride very well n it bucked and she fell off. and talk about her clipping it is awfull. that why we called her fanny tammy. also we dont just throw anyone on anything if you have ever called us then you will no that we always ask what your abitly is before we put you on anything. so dont believe everything you hear bad about us coz our yard is like a family we all get on soo well. and dont even get me started on fairview, bin once never again. you actually have to pay to help *** a joke. you would have thought that the owner wud be great full for your help instead of askin you to pay. no matter what anyone says try kirkfields out you mite be surprised.
at least we dont drug our horses up when they are up for sale, i wonder who does dat???? hummm

I'm not far from the equestrian centre but, although I have paddocks at home, I'm currently horseless and borrowing/having lessons to get my fitness & stamina back after a twelve year gap.
I'm keeping an eye open for a new mount but not really actively looking as I'm not yet up to riding the sort I like;) although I might buy a couple of babies for company too.

SEC changed hands earlier this year & is having a lot of improvements - with no baling string in sight.

Hi everyone! I have just mooved from Poland to Nottingham two weeks ago.
On the day before i had my flight to england i had been given an opportunity to hack around a german forest for a few hours with my friends and i have to say that was one of the best expiriences of my life:)
The thing is that i have always been dreaming of riding but except this one time i didnt have a chance to do it, so i would like to ask you for advice on how to get started, where to find a good "riding school" or something alike...
I have found this place http://www.tvequestrian.co.uk/ and on some forums peaople claimed it was a nice place and it is not far from the place i live.
It would be also great to get in touch with somebody cause i have totally no knowledge about nottinghamshire and not any single friend in here.

TV I would also recommend, although dont know how the school is run but I would think from also competing and knowing the owner it will be a good school.

There is also Woodside, run on the edge of Nottingham, (Mansfield side) I would think they would be a suitable place to ride. Im sure they do adult lessons, feel free to PM me for any details.

Bloomsgorse the one in sherwood pines, get to it off the 614? If its the one i think it is then yes it is shut down... now a livery as far as im aware.
Id recommend Fairview tbh, i like it down there... or Wellow is meant to be good?
Im not actually up in the area anymore though.

i live up the road in eakring..wellow is good unless you want to buy something from their shop..then their aftersales is crap.. bloomsgorse is now a livery as my friend keeps her horse their. i went on a happy hacke day their years ago and it was ok. bit rundown.

Hi Kirsty, it was a very long time ago that i went to Bloomsgorse lol, but i heard that the owner went bankrupt so it probably did go downhill towards the end, it was fine when i went there :)

I actually ride at Kirkfields, and I think I would be lost without it. It's the best riding school ever! I ride Xsynna (ex racehorse) or Flame (ex showjumper) - both thoroughbreds and my intructor is brilliant.

xsynna used to be at the yard in eakring were i keep my boy..

Heya i used to work there - it was the best place for trekking as they had such beautiful countryside without having to go anywhere near a main road! I loved it. Unfortunately they had to close. As they relied mainly on riders from Center Parcs, and with peoples attitudes getting worse in the case of sueing each other, insurance etc meant that people could only go out on hacks if they had done a certain amount of riding. As I would say 80% of their clients were complete beginners, people who had 'always fancied' going horse riding, or 5 year olds that were dragged out because their parents wanted to go, most of the parents hadnt ridden since they themselves were 10.... that wiped out most of their custom, so they just couldnt afford to keep it going. It is such a shame that the few people who dont understand that horse riding is a risk sport because the only type of horse riding that is any fun is that where the horses arent complete robots who barely move, have spoilt this for so many people by making insurance companies too afraid to provide insurance cover. Gah!!!

I remember years ago a friend of mine sold a pony to Bloomsgorse. i didnt know it had ceased trading though  Oh and i am Kirkby born and bred, lived at Berry Hill in Mansfield for 15 years, now in sutton! My best friends dad is a well known grumpy OLD OLD farrier, and other best friend owns a well known tack shop! And i also work for a certain someone that everyone knows through her endurance days and her arabs!
