Hi. This may be a silly question but I'm not familiar with horses. I took a club horse, unfamiliar to me, for a ride recently. While leading him to the paddock he stopped several times and neighed so long and loud it scared me. when we were trotting he neighed several times again and I didn't know what was going on. The other horses I'm familiar with never did that. Which brings me to the question..why do they do that and is it something to be scared about??

Dont be scared!
He was probably shouting on his friends :)
Making noises like neighing is a form of communication for horses as well as body language.
Some horses are more vocal than others though!! :D

My daughter is 6, and rides 3 different ponies at the RS we go to. She was startled at first by one pony who neighs a fair bit - he does it every time she rides him, so it's nice to know why!
She's used to him now. ;)

Mine neighs to other horses when we're out sometimes, she neighs for help when we're in a lesson and she's had enough (the neighing comes after the strop!). She has the most unladylike neigh you've ever heard, she really puts her heart and soul into it ... it's REALLY weird to sit to!

I was walking out a stallion, and hosing him down. Well he caught a glampse of the lippizaners in the next field, You should've heard that baby roar. He scared me too. Then I cracked up laughing and refused to sweat scrape him anywhere nears his unmentionables.

mine neighs in 'exciting' situations ie she spent most of show we went to neighing, she even neighed inside the showring etc :D

its just their way of communicating with other horses.
My gelding positively screams when at shows, excitement and too many other horses, his nickers and BIG neighs equates to "Hey look at me everyone, HELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLOOOOOOOO!!!! Someone shout back" and inevitably the horse chorus starts up and they all start telling each other about their journeys to the show, who they fancy, who's the shiniest etc etc etc......
