View Full Version : Your highest jump ever?

What is the highest you have ever jumped (on a horse, naturally)?
And did you sail through the air as if there was no gravity or crash and burn?
Were you terrified or thrilled?
And how big was the horse (or pony) so we have a perspective?
And would you do it again...?
(no exaggerating!!)

Biggest single jump I've jumped - eh, dunno, about 4'6 ish. But a single big jump is not really of any interest to me, being able to jump a full course with style at that height is a much better indicator. The biggest full course I've jumped is 3'9, on a 16.1 welshxTB. We were doing equitation jumping and did quite well. It looked HUGE whilst I was walking it but didn't seem so bad once I was riding.

I don't jump anyhing on a horse that I couldn't easily jump myself ;) Maybe 2'6" if I'm feeling REALLY brave

3 yrs ago on an 18 year old 15.1 maybe 15.2hh Appy Gelding named sam i had never jumped over 3'6 neither had he... and i felt like i was flying, not like was going to crash and burn
we jumped 5' that day playing chase me charlie, i was scared to death comming into it but once i had done it i was absolutly thrilled and breathless almost, my heart was pounded...he was quite full of himself and proud hehe.
i would do it again in a heartbeat however besides him there is only one other horse in the world i would trust enough to do it on as he has passed away and that is a 13.3hh pony hehe
cource wise i have never really done over 3'3 maybe with some stuff around 3'6 thrown in there.

I agree...the size of the whole course matters more than a single jump.
However, the older I get, the bigger the jumps seem to be.

I also agree that a lot depends on how much confidence you have in the horse that you are pointing at the fences.
As I grew older, I enjoyed jumping more after I had done it than beforehand, like the relief they say one feels when you stop hitting yourself in the head with a hammer.

Shame you specified 'on a horse'. Biggest one I cleared was just over four foot. Sadly Mac (pony) didn't. She waited for me on the take-off side. And while I did sail through the air as if I'd unlocked the key to anti-gravity, landing was definitely a case of crash and burn. :o
Actually mounted it's a lot less impressive.... probably about three and a half feet, although that was cross country fences, not showjumping. If we're talking showjumping I don't remember jumping anything over three foot.

Biggest I jumped was on my friend's 14hh pony xc. She spent the whole time pulling to the left and at one point jumped the wing instead of the jump! The jump was about 18", the wing was 4 foot.
Showjump jumps the highest I went was about 3'6" in a staff chase-me-charlie on christmas eve years ago cos some of the horses needed exercising! I was about 15 riding my favourite pony Cream Puff (wussy name!), who was an utter wuss at jumping. I bowed out after 3'6" because I felt that was high enough for him - he had had one of those low 'recovery' strides on landing and as he wasn't young any more I figured that would do.
Comp carried on to about 4'9" - only two left, YM on his affiliated showjumper (17.3hh ish) and student on school horse (14.2hh). YM fell off rather spectacularly when his horse refused and practically bounced off the side of the school. Student on school horse won!

What is the highest you have ever jumped (on a horse, naturally)?
4 foot upright double, just for a bit of fun, me and my friends had some friendly competition to see who could go the highest, none of us were usually jumpers, but why not?
And did you sail through the air as if there was no gravity or crash and burn?
Yes, we sailed, in between the rushed approach and the uncontrolled landing...
Were you terrified or thrilled?
Thrilled of course! I'm an occasional adrenalin addict.
And how big was the horse (or pony) so we have a perspective?
16hh although I used to jump my 13hh pony when I had her and she regularly jumped 3 foot courses...
And would you do it again...?
Definitely. If I had a horse with any jumping ability I would probably jump that height on a regular basis, but I somehow end up riding horses that are too small for me, and I would feel awful to ask them to jump that with me on board!

What is the highest you have ever jumped (on a horse, naturally)?
5'3 it was second part of a double in a course made at home
And did you sail through the air as if there was no gravity or crash and burn?
horse sailed over quite easily, didnt hesitate!
Were you terrified or thrilled?
first time i was abit wary but was quite confident, then went over afew more times and loved it! best feeling ever!
And how big was the horse (or pony) so we have a perspective?
16.2hh coloured ISH
And would you do it again...?

leanneNcopper -
What a lovely, big horse! I love the his (or her) confident expression. I also love coloured horses.
Your position isn't rubbish. Your leg could have been a bit more relaxed and bent at the knew, then you wouldn't be slightly in front of the saddle. If your hands were 3 or 4 inches further forward your reins would have loosened just a touch. Just a couple of tiny, picky details. But you found a perfect take-off spot to a large fence and obviously approached with enough impulsion to get the job done and done well. That's the main thing.
Anyone else have some pictures?

obviously this isn't 5' but once we got past here my instructer had to put down the camera and do a little more instructing then picture taking because this is when people started getting into trouble. this is also about when i started to just hold on and go "please sam dont refuse"http://www.newrider.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=17760

5'7" true oxer in BSJA open comp on borrowed horse in 1987.
Didn't have time to be nervous....no brakes.
Course shouldn't have been this big. A lot of the competitors reckoned the course builder had been taking a few too many nips out of his hip flask to keep out the cold.

Some impressive sized jumps here!
Mine is a 4ft3-6 XC fence whilst at Pony Club camp. For some reason I wasnt scared, more excited (especially as my instructor obviously thought we were OK to do it!!), and it felt great. We seemed to go up for a bit but held in the air for ages, and then the going down again took forever! I did it on Kally, who is a 15.2 TBx. Would love to do it again. In fact, in my Hall of Amazing Riding Experiences, it scores pretty high, as it was about the first time I truly trusted Kally.
Thanks Rocketman, good thread. Hadnt thought about that moment for ages!

this is also about when i started to just hold on and go "please sam dont refuse"
Boy, do I remember this feeling. I had a 15h 1" exuberant, nutty (totally crazed) little mare in an Area International Trial (aka Grand Prix). Most of the course was 5' to 5'3", including the triple combination. In those days (when I was young and brave and sitting on a wonderful horse), when I walked the course, if I could see over the top of the jump standing on mytiptoes, I thought it would be OK. I could not see over the top of the wall, which came over the top of my hard hat, even on my tiptoes. I am 5'4" (without the helmet) and the wall was still taller, however high I stretched.
Harvey Smith had already fallen at this fence before it was my turn to go. I don't know how I made it through the triple combination just before it (Alan Oliver couldn't bear to watch...anyone remember him?). Then I turned to the big wall.
I just closed my eyes and hung on as we lifted off. When I opened my eyes and looked back, the wall was still there, intact.
The little mare did it all by herself. I take no credit (frozen in the saddle as I was) for her giant leap of faith.

Instructor's mare, about 15/15.3, riding round the school and instructor said "well she'll go over it if you want". jump was about 4'6", great buzz. Never managed more than about 3.3 on mine :D

I don't know for certain, since we didn't measure it, but something like 4'2"-4'4". The little guy I was riding was only 15:1!
Since then I've ridden pretty much exclusively green horses :) and started them over jumping, got them to 3' or so, and moved on to another horse. My Kat was coming along *really* well just before I started having severe back problems; I was planning to move up to Prelim with her rapidly at that point...(3'7" to 4'1"). I'd jumped her to 3'6", though the way she took them I think we went over 5' ;) the first few times.

heighest jump would be a 3'9" oxer with a 4ft spread on my friends 15.2HH appaloosa. It was the last jump of a triple, but the rest of the course was only maybe 3ft-3'3", just made that one huge for a bit of fun.
Scariest part was coming into the first jump of the triple and seeing it looming there, but going over it was amazing! This particular horse has the most spectacular style when he uses himself properly (bascule like a banana!) and he surprised me with his strength. It was so much fun! He'd also only jumped that height once before, so it made me feel very special that he trusted me enough to let me come along for the ride that day:)
Heighest on my own horse, we have done a couple full up 3'6" courses at home. Unfortunatly the only time we did a chase-me-charlie, I was eliminated at 3'6" for a rail, which was just due to my own stupidity (as usual) so not very exciting at all! hmmm maybe this year we'll go higher? :D ;)

Highest I ever jumped on Chevy was his second fence ever. He wasn't sure what to jump, so he cleared the whole thing.. standard and all. I just held on for dear life!
If he hadn't just sat on his tail and thrown himself in the air, I'm sure it would have been great :) The highest we've jumped when he actually jumped the pole was 3'3.

deliberately? 4 foot 2, on a 14hh NF pony.
accidentally, a 5 bar gate (well, 2 of them, in and out of a field) on a 16.2hh chap. we were on a treasurte hunt asns he got a bit overexcited and carted me back to the yard going over the gates and a main road on the way. i have no idea how i stayed on - i was only 13.

eeeeeer as a mini course (4 jumps including a double) 4ft3 on Poppy, who's a 15.2hh tbxwelsh. Schooling over proper courses, we normally go up to about 3ft10.
That's the biggest I've ever jumped .. . though I used to jump 3ft3 courses on Donny, 13.1hh connie, before my legs touched the ground :D

Deliberately I jump 4'3-4'6 on my guys. We show in Open Hunters and all the jumper class we can! I love it theres nothing like jump a good, safe fun round!
Accidentally I have jumped a 6' fence. I was riding in the field when a deer came out of the woods! I didn't see it, but the horse saw it come running out of the woods! He bolted I tryed to stop him, but it didn't work. Slick an to the fence and jumped it! HOLY!!! I felt like we where in the air FOREVER!! Slick is no longer a live :( We had to put him down 2 year ago at the age of 18. He was a 17.3hh TB DWB cross. I showed him in Jr. Jumpers and Open Hunter for the last 4 years of his life.
As some on said I too think it is better to jump small jumps/course then it is too jump one "Big" rail!

I love jumping and live to jump but only if im confident in myself and my trusty steed, the biggest iv jumped is 4ft but shadow jumped it way bigger than that, made me speachless!!!! boy that horse can jump, he is a 16.1hh TB bred for jumping, he has jumped much bigger but im a big wus and refuse anything bigger than 4ft!!!
I usually do 3'6 or 3'9, and xc i do 3ft!!!
On my old pony a 14hh 4 year old gypsy cob i also jumped 4ft, he loved jumping too, was great at it and jumped it with ease, thats my limit im afraid!!!

1.20m (sorry, not sure what that is in feet), and the horse was 16hh.
It felt like a really big jump, but I wasn't aware it was this big because my instructor kept putting it up and up. If I knew the height of this jump before going over it I think I would have refused to jump it! :D It was fun though! It was part of a 5 fence course (including 2 logs, 3 pole/winged jumps).

i jumped 3ft on a horse that had just threw 2 people i knew off at a 1foot straight, 3ft on my old horse Snip, 2ft9 course on Lizzi, an ex advanced eventer, 2ft6 course on Paddy and 2ft3-2ft6course on Bertha. :D thats the biggest ive ever jumped. it looks all really small when most of you have jumped like 4-5ft!
Many peope have jumped high, but one jump if you hink about it doesnt need as much skill as say even a 3ft 3 cource. I have jumpe 4ft 8, but i couldnt and neither could my horse do a whole course of that!!
2ft 9 is a good height for your adverage horse :) so what if it isnt huge digits ;) Quality over quantity....or errrr height! ;)

Hey Rather Be Ridin I think you have got the question wrong..it means without the course..how high have you jumped? I am not trying to contridict you at all, I am just saying the question said 'Your highest jump ever?' not 'Your highest course ever?' :D

I dunno how big is the biggest i've ever jumped... probably between 3ft-4ft(though i doubt as big as 4ft and probably closer to 3ft) or either/ though probably both Tyler and Connor... Tylers 14.2hh and Connor is 16.2hh and all the jumps I did on both of them were Great!!! Connor always felt like he put very little effort into jumping! he's just been doing showjumping with the owners daughter for just under a year after becoming a bit to lively for the school! and Tyler... well everything I jumped on him was always pretty fun too!!! though I think our two biggest achevements together would definatly be jumping the wall so many times... the I nearly refused to take him in the showjumping because of that wall... but i'm sooo glad I took him in that first class!!! we ended up jumping it a total of... (if i've counted right) 7 times after the first time we flew over it every time and Tyler LOVED it he speed up pricked his ears and jumped like a professional!!! bless him! I never got round to braving it at open height :( I bet if Tyler had been around for the last three shows I would have done it once at least... :( our other big jumping achevement would have to be working hunter... we won it three times in a row! (in all three shows he was there for!) not bad for a lazy riding school pony lol!
here he is jumping the wall this was actually our last show and the last time I ever rode him... :(
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a328/PunkRockPony/Tyler/fence11intermidateround.jpg
Its not too big but it was an achevement and hes the only pony I have trusted enough to jump it!

The highest jump i can remember doing was this 3.2 ft oxer on XC.it was really wide aswell. i was riding a 13.3 hh pony, and as i jumped it i lost my stirrup. when i landed i slipped out the side door, and was dragged about 20 yrds.

highest jump would be 3'9'' to 4', not entirely sure, that was on my 16hh loan thoroughbred, i jumped 3' on my 12.2hh highland x shetland, bless him! :D
jumping on the 16hh my lower leg wasnt very secure and the school we were in was quite small only 3 o 4 strides after the jump and there was the fence to the school so wasnt as secure as i could be. :D
felt more secure on the 12.2hh :D
would definately do it again though.

My highest was a few inches under 3 foot I think (I don't know the exact height). I only did it once on a 14.2hh mad cob, and hated it :o I thik I've only jumped once since that (that being over 6 months ago), and that was a tiny fun showjumping course, all the jumps being about 1 foot in height. i have the most amazing horse! He is a 16hh 7/8th TB x arab, When i first got him he was just broken and just five and demolished whatever we got near enough to jump. The highest fence we have since cleared was a 5ft single pole, it felt like flying in slow motion, it was perfect.
The scaryest thing i have ever jumped was a five bar gate out hacking dont know what came over us but it seemed like a good idea at the time . One of the best was a 3'9'' double upright of poles haveing just galloped down hill on a cross country course, that was serrial.
I have jumped a 3'9 bounce on my 13.3 mare and it wont be long before shes readyto do a course that hight.
4'3'' on a 14hh wesh sec D with springs for feet.
AND!!!! a open ditch as wide as a tractor out hunting( on the afore mentioned amazing horse)
Remember first we do the possiable , then we do the probable, and soon we do the impossiable ! :)

4ft on pride a good few years ago (about 6 i think), bear in mind that pride is only 14hh.
3ft 6 on harvey, all 12.2hh of him!
pride felt like flying , effortless, serene and almost like an extended stride of canter. harvey tried to put in a dirty stop just before the jump then changed his mind and catjumped it, landed bucked dipped his shoulder and span on one hind leg and thus i ended up on the floor!
