In Ireland there is a rare pony breed called Kerry Bog Pony.
Anyone know about them?
Here a link:

I thibk they gorgeous. I also like the stallion Flashy Fox alot because he reminds me of my first pony, Sandy. We never got a chance to blood/genetic test her to see if if could actually be a kerry bog pony herself.
She died from colic.

I would love to hear from anyone who actually have this pony breed.

I had heard of them,in fact I emailed the stud owners asking about DNA tests (it was for some archaeological research - far too anaoraky to bother with here!) but never received a reply.

Attractive little ponies though.

Angie Alison (Looking Glass Stud) Used to have one when she lived in Herefordshire but they both seem to have dissapeared.

Interesting.

Thanks forposting this thread. The rarer breeds such as this, Eriskay, Lundy etc often get forgotten about aside from the usual M&M list.

They are supposed to be very closely related to ICleandics. The priests went over to Iceland and took their bog ponies with them, they all got mixed with Shetlands, Fjords and whatever else was about 1500 years ago and you ended up with the Icelandic.

That is why I emailed the breeder Wally - wanted to look at DNA to see if there was any remnant DNA that related the Kerry Bog Pony to the extinct Celtic Pony and as you say ultimately to the Icelandic population.

PhD in itself though :(

Rips - Im from Kerry like the Bog Ponies :D

Wally - Didnt know that, about they could be related to the Icelandic Ponies.

Ambatt - What did the Celtic Pony look like? I didnt know there a breed called Celtic Pony.

We don't really know - it has been extinct for 100s of years - we have some archaeological evidence (bones and the like) so we have an idea on height but that is about it. The Celtic Pony is supposed to be the ancestor of most of the native pony breeds including the Icelandic. I did have a paper on ancestral genetics and population but it made me go cross-eyed reading it!

Iv just come accross this thread and how interesting and beautiful the ponies are. I bought my two ponies as foals from Kerry and now as they have grown one looks like a Wesh x Shetland but my youngest his mother was a shetland but we were unsure as to what his father was but looking at these pictures it could well have been a bog pony he looks the spitting image of these ponies only he is a very light chestnut and has the delecate face of an arab. I actually bought them from Listowel from a farm in the Bog (should have know then eh!!) I had heard of Bog Ponies my mother being irish but never thought it was a breed just what they called the little ponies that carried the turf home. Its amazing what you find out. Ive been to "a day out in the Bog" outide Tralee but unfortunately it was thereopen day many years ago and the didn't have the ponies then.

The 'Day in the Bog' centre outside Tralee is still there and there is one Bog Pony there now with other animals in the field.
I pass the centre every day.
Would love to have one.

Our stable has two of them, around 2 years old. One of them is said to be the first of her breed born in the USA. :) I feel like we have a little celebrity. hahaha

They are really cute little ladies. And are loved by all at the stable.

Bogmother and I are at the same stable. I found a pic of her two girls and stripped off the information like names and locations. (hopefully this actually displays it)

Her girls are now nearly two and filled out elegantly. I seen Bog mom working them the other day. Ever seen a young pony rearing? hahhaa It was the cutest thing. They might look like mares but they'll always be babies to me. hehe

There very pretty aren't they?! Can I ask how much would one cost? Like a 5 year old mare for example

Lora

couldn't even begin to pretend I could answer that. I looked on several horse sites where you can buy by breed and none have Kerry bog pony (only connemara, not the same)

Due to how special it is, I would imagine you would be best to go to a breeder and see what they are looking for. Most would want to sell you a baby then you would have a blank slate for you and a trainer to work with. A mare at 5 is already ready to plan breeding and might fetch a higher dollar figure.

Here's a stallion in UK but no price is listed: http://www.ennisstud.co.uk/4sale.html

And here is a charity auction the association had to promote the breed. Maybe it can give you an idea of who to contact and such. http://kildare.ie/community/notices/irish-bog-pony.asp

Have yet to see any mares up for sale. Just stallions and geldings.

Sorry I couldn't answer with an answer, just a dozen directions to dig. :)

I suppose anyone who would have them would be breeding them really! While if I got one I wouldn't! Pity, do you know how high they go?

Well, maybe not. There's always going to be a few that are lovely for pet purposes but maybe not quite good for breeding. Like let's say there's there some tiny little undesireable trait or color mark that they want to breed out of the line, you would want to geld the stallion or not breed the mare and just keep as pet. :D

Keep an eye in the horse sites/ and ads, ask google constantly and get to know breeders in UK I would say. And most assuredly someone will come up with a nice mare for you.

The best source for answers to your questions regarding breeding, cost, etc. would be an owner and/or breeder. As an owner of these ponies, I'd be happy to assist. Please contact me directly.
