We figure he's a Quarterhorse/Standardbred, but I'd like opinions. He was supposed to be a purebred registerable Quarterhorse (both parents were supposed to be registered).

Also, what's the name of his type of bay? He changes from a bright copper red in the summer, to a deeper brown in the winter.

He also doesn't have the usual black legs, just black hocks and then brown cannon, then black pasterns and black ermine spots on his socks. He also dapples in the summer.

See here:

It's difficult to get a proper picture of his color as it changes depending on the light. The pictures are always darker... when he really gleams a very bright copper red. When you see him in person he looks more like this:

In spring and fall when his coat starts growing again he looks like this:

In the winter he looks like this:

He'd be wild type bay. It's a colour often seen on feral horses and ponies; like Mustangs in the US, brumbies in Australia, and the native moor and hill ponies in the UK. Most horses change colour from one season to another, and some change dramatically; I have one liver chestnut mare who's the colour of plain chocolate in the summer, and then goes a light gingery colour when she grows her winter coat.

He does look like he has Standardbred in there, from what I've seen of them; but I don't really know enough about those breeds to comment :)

Definitly some standardbred. He'd got the clsssic standardbred head neck and shoulder. Not a stnadardbred bum though. The way's he's left his legs behind is almost walking horse ;)

He's lovely :D . I'd call that bay blood bay.

He trots like one too. He's got the most beautiful extension...

As for the leaving his legs behind, he doesn't usually stand like that, he was just sprawling to turn and look behind at somebody with carrots. *grins* I haven't taught him to square up when tied yet, and he takes full advantage of the ability to sprawl.

What's the difference between his bum and the Standardbred? Is it a good difference?

I was hoping he was a blood bay, it's just that he's not bright fire red like the ones I've seen, just a bright copper.

I just looked up wild-type bay, and it fits him. The only difference is some references state striping, which he doesn't have. The only other black markings are slight bit on his muzzle, the very tips of his ears and his mane and tail. Thanks Chev :)

very nice looking horse, but please wear a riding hat.

I agree, wear a helmet at all times. I'm sorry to be blunt but to ride without a hat is complete and utter stupidity. Just yesterday I read about a tragic accident in which two girls were thrown from a horse. The girl wearing a hat survived, whereas the other, who normally wore a hat but had lent it to her friend, died of head injuries. Take care of yourself.

The helmet issue has been addressed already in the thread here (http://www.newrider.com/forum/showthread.php?t=64252). Feel free to join in there, but I'd rather keep this thread on topic.

I just wanted to throw in the comment that he may actually be all Quarter Horse, from two registered parents despite his not a typical QH type head. We get used to the style of head popular with QH halter breeders and forget that some of the working ranch type QH's weren't always bred with a "pretty" head in mind... As a kid I had a registered QH who had a very roman-nosed head! Actually some things about your horse remind me of him.

Sorry Styric, it would seem I jumped in a bit quick to criticise there, it's just I could never imagine riding without my hat or body protector, and know it has saved my life! Everyone I know rides with one so it shocks me when I hear of people who don't. I'm glad you normally wear a helmet. And with that, I actually go back on topic, sorry! :(
I'm not an expert on QH's (don't see many of them around here!) but something about the shape of his body and head suggests that he's not full QH, especially the way he stands with his hind legs quite far back. I agree, I definitely thing Saddlebred X QH is a possibility. His coulour's gorgeous, you don't often see bright redddish bays like that. And he's so gleaming and healthy looking too! :D

Don't worry about it holly B :) No offense was taken.

As for the topic:

His looks could be QH, but he doesn't quite move like a QH either:
Here's the closest pics I can find that show his working trot:

http://styric.no-ip.org/images/practiceride/pictures/IMGP0432.JPG

I'm in a QH barn myself, and his trot seems way different. Not just in speed, but alot more elastic and flowing. His forelegs also extend quite a bit, even in those pictures of his normal working trot you can see he tends to really get his shoulder going.

And his walk:

Posting my own reply.. yeesh.

Anyways I found out that his mum was close (as in by a few pens) to both a Morgan stallion and a Standardbred one.
