View Full Version : Laceration to nearside pastern!

Bebe somehow managed to get through the electric fencing, trample a whole hedge of bracken and get her hoof caught on the wire fencing that is in front of the stone wall that makes the boundary of her field. I got there last night to find her hoof covered in blood, panic stations were on all alert.

I cleaned it up and thankfully it isn't too deep, about 10mm. Called the vet out and he wasn't too concerned, just gave her an antibiotic injection and gave me a 6 day course of powdered antibiotics (chickened out on doing injected antibiotics by myself) and some cream to help it heal and keep flies off.

She's to have 2 weeks off work but turned out as usual (24/7). Vet said I shouldn't even be able to tell it happened in 6 weeks.

Has anyone else experienced this kind of injury? How long did it take to heal, any problems you came across, etc?

Any advice would be helpful.
Thanks
Amanda

PS, she's fine in herself, putting weight on it but obviously it's sore. She's an absolute angel about having it cleaned and creamed, even though I have to shove the cream right into the cut (ick!).

Yes, and much worse, really, honestly don't worry, if she's sound she'll be fine.

Horses are tough cookies (thouhg some can be drama queens:D )

my horse did this to her outside of her pastern, it did leave a lump, and if i use boot wraps and they are put on to tight it can split the cut open a little, my horse was a sweety she must have thick skin she let me sponge it and clean all the mud out everyday.
But she wasn't lame and didn't have to have any time off work, a year later and it can still split open if rubbing occurs but it's no great problem but looks strange, as new skin formed rather than the two side joining back togeather.

My yearling colt suffered this same kind of injury this past June. I had the vet out, he put some surgical glue on it, gave him a shot of antibiotics, and I treated it with an antibacterial cream. He has a little scar and probably always will. He never went lame and if your mare is sound, she should be all right. If you ride her, just make sure that you put boots on her and that should help. :-)

Hi

Thanks for your responses.

My mare was lame for a few days but is sound now, if a little bit stiff (only I seem to notice so maybe its paranoia).

I've decided not to ride her until it heals properly. I'll only be able to ride twice a week now it's dark early anyway and it's not enough to regain the fitness she'll have lost during the two weeks field rest the vet prescribed (she was very fit before). Plus I don't have any front boots that would protect the area without re-opening or putting pressure on it. So, she's living the life of riley for the next month or so.

The worrying thing about this cut is that she keeps pulling it back open. She's wonderful for having the cream on and thankfully the field isn't muddy (yet!) so I don't have to worry about that. The vet warned it would take a long time to fully heal so I guess it's just a case of waiting for nature to take its course

Thanks
Amanda

Don't worry when this happened to my horse, it was two weeks after i bought her and i was a first time owner, it took about three months to fully cover itself it did keep coming open but you just have to persist
