Hi All,
I'm looking for suggestions for ONE good book for first time owner (sigh...someday) to have. Something that has the basics on feed, care, stable management, etc.
I love to read up on this kind of thing and am slowly developing a library of things- 2 books so far- Heather's (of course!) and Horses for Dummies.
My husband just rolls his eyes, shakes his head and says- "as long as you're enjoying yourself". I'm sure he's thinking, when is she going to grow out of this phase!
Thanks,
Nancy

The British Horse society guide to Stable Management is a good book to have, as it has LOADS of info in it. Also the Pony Clubs Manual of Horsemanship is good too, and you dont have to be in the pony club or young for it. Its a brilliant book.

i was thinking of getting that book..
does anyone know if any of the following are any good?
Veterinary notes for horse owners
a-z of horse diseases and health problems
no foot, no horse
a guide to pants posionous to horses
201 more handy hints for horse persons :D
or any more suggestions...
are the above titles included in the BHS compelte stable management manual??
I have books in german on horse ownership etc but they are a challenege to read and i think for quick reference i woudl better off with some in english!

I have the a-z veterinary guide and have found it very useful.
The BHS guide's are also very helpful. I have the basic stable management one and find it useful to go back every now and again, mainly to look up things that I don't do very often (put boots on, bandaging, etc).
A guide to poisonous plants is a must although I don't personally have the one listed.
Any reading you do now will pay off in the long run, it's suprising what you remember even years on so keep at it! :o)

201 hints has some strange ideas but i have found it very useful and certain tips are time saving if you are in a rush
i have the book of posionous plants i have found it fab, but it doesn't have coloured pics which can obviously be a prob because they can look the same, and so when u are looking at a plant you have to look very carefully, and look at the pics carefully, they do tell u the colours for some, anyway it has lots of information, and is cheap.
i have found one or two books not good enough as they only give you a general outline so i have got about 10-15 books which specialize in certain areas
some other great books are
In harmony with your horse by Claire albinson--a personal favourite
Riding and schooling by Claire albinson
Solve your horse and pony problems--- by Karen Bush and sarh viccars
The complete guide to horsemanship by Michael Brander, a fantastic all rounder book, has great detail and subjects
THESE ARE FAIRLY CHEAP BOOKS
a more expensive but good book is
The practical riders handbook ---by Debby sly

Ultimate Horse Care is very good, and the pony club books are usually nice too. :)
