Ok, I am not sure if anyone might know what this is but the other day I noticed Breezy's mane about half way up looked red from far away, it almost looked like she rubbed up against red paint and it dried but I got a closer look and it is actually her skin underneath that is red, it doesn't look irritated, or bumpy, or pussy or anything and I noticed her mane has started to fall out in that area. I looked in my little vet book I have but it has nothing like that listed. Does anyone have any idea what this could be???

I will give him a call this afternoon and see if he can give me an idea. It is just the weirdest thing because there are no sores of anything that I can see. I know when she sheds her winter coat it comes off in patches, it really concerned me at first but when I contacted her previous owner they said that is just how she sheds but I am not sure if this has anything to do with the new coat push hairs out to make way for her winter coat.

But how can the skin be red and not look irritated?
I don't think manes and tails shed for the winter coat. It would take too long to regrow if ti completely shed out. Body hair gets shed.
Hope it's something that's easy to take care of!

The vet came out yesterday and took a look at her since it was getting worse. He believes that maybe her mane got rub and a sore on it, possibly from her putting her head through our round bale feeder and it got some kind of bacteria in it. He said it may be a mix of bacteria and fungus. I was putting some blue kote spray on there but he said it was high in alcohol but is ok as long as she didn't have any opens wounds but if she had a cut or something he wouldn't recommend it since the alcohol content is high. So we will see what happens.

My cob has a bit of a sore patch on his mane where he sticks his neck through the fence to get at the blades of grass on the other side!
