I'm trying to teach myself to vault too, not bcause I do mounted games, just because I think it's quite cool! I'm practising on my sister's pony (13.2/13.3ish and chunky) and my pony (14hh and also chunky) and so far haven't managed it properly... I'm just taking it a step at a time really and hopefully I'll manage it eventually! At the moment I keep landing on but not quite far enough to swing my leg over... but hopefully my suppleness, technique etc. will eventually improve. Keep practising and I'm sure it'll come eventually! :D

I really want to vault victor but I can hardly get up on him with a saddle so not the best of things to try!

hehe ponylover, Pep didnt even bother when I ran full force into her, grabbed onto her mane and bounced off her massive belly :) !! she's a good girl just shaped like a barrel, i think i'd have more look on the new horse at the yard, 16.2  !

I have the same problem because mine are barrell shaped... it would be OK if they were 14 hands and slim, but because they're wide and cobby and a bit tubby at the moment, I just bounce off their bellies in a rather unglamorous way! Need to work first of all on actually doing it, then doing it with a bit of style and elegance! :p :D

you should have watched the 1st episode of queens cavalry!
I can vault onto a horse over 16hh by using the same method as them (but i tried it before i saw the programme)
you dont have to run, stand by the horse and hold onto the pommel (with reins) and cantle. Bend your legs and jump. Land with your belly/ hips on the saddle leaning over. Then you can flick your leg over and Bob's your uncle.

grab the withers, and then basically you keep your head DOWN and when you jump swing that leg up and over if you keep your leg down you can really get your legs up. i can vault onto 16.2H easily by just keeping my head down and swinging that leg.

14.1 should be easy ;) . Just you try vaulting on to the vaulting horses - they're all 17hh+ Now THAT is a long way up.
Says me who can't get onto the 14.3hh vaulting horse we had. He just doesn't give the lift in his movement. But I could get on Fred (16.3hh) no probs.
And my most proud day was when we took Kim (16.2hh) out bareback and I had to get off (dropped my phone). And I managed to vault back on from the ground. Sooooooooooooo proud of myself :D
practise practise praxtise is the key. It's actually easier when they're moving. Just bear in mind that it's not good for their backs.

i used to vault onto my 14hh pony when riding bareback all the time, but then he started threatening to bite and that was when I realised I may have been hurting his back so I started getting a leg up. I do occasionally get on without a leg up but not very often, with or without a saddle.

when i vault at the yard we start off on peter chunky 13.1hh and if we can do him we go to a different pony. but the problems start when you can do all ponies and you go to get back onto peter and you make your jump too big and go head first over the otherside. :D :D :o

I'll be reporting back telling you how it went hehe ;)

one way is to try facing your ponys bum, left hand nearest the pony on pommle of the saddle and then swing with your right leg then again and bounce of your other leg and grab the saddle with your right hand then pull!
having to practise twice a week everyweek for mounted games, i have got vaulting down to a fine art and can do it with ease, it is true though, practise makes perfect!!

Try vaulting on while your pony is moving it is alot easier. Run or walk beside the pony with your right hand on the pommel and your left on the mane and pull yourself upwhile he walks or trots. :)
