Hiya!

Since we are not allowed to use shavings at our yard (they say it doesn't decompose quickly enough...they spread the muck heap)...I have asked if I can use Megazorb as I understand its a paper byproduct and rots down very quickly.

Anyway, was wondering if anyone knew roughly how many bags it would take to make up a full bed (semi deep litter) in a 12 x 12 stable?

Also, can you make banks with it? I read on an old thread that its like cat litter when you first put it down...so wouldn't this make banks difficult to make cos they'd keep rolling down?

Any responses gratefully received!!

ps. If anyone knows anything about Medi bed or Belvoir straw bedding they might be good alternatives??

Hi I've been using megazorb on a stone stable floor which is very uneven and so I can't use rubber matting. Apart from the fact that our cob thinks it is for rolling on immediately he comes in to the stable ( he doesnt do that with straw) I am very impressed by it. It absorbs huge amounts of water. Don't be deceived by the size of the bag - it goes a long way. I must admit I haven't banked it as I use straw round the edges. I would have thought 6 bags would easily do a stable to start, but I've only needed two bags for a thin layer in the middle where my rough section is. I only clear the droppings on a daily basis ( I find it easier with poo gloves but you might flinch at that) I clear the wet once a week only

Thanks for that skyeblu....very helpful.

I've always just used rubber gloves for poo picking anyway....much easier and less wasteage than using a fork!

I thought 8 bags delivered to start, so if it takes 6 bags, it should keep me going for a little while.

I don't know whether you will be able to pick up the wet stuff with a shavings fork. I just use a shovel

I use it as a base layer on top of rubber mats but under staw to soak up urine as my stable doesn't drain very well.

1 bag does go a long way despite the bags looking to be pretty small. I only put megazorb down on the places where I know urine accummulates so usually half a bag covers this area. I tend to dig out the wet spot once or twice a week depending on how wet my mare is overnight. A bag usually lasts a fortnight.

I think I put down 8 bags in a 12x12 stable with small'ish banks but that was quite a thin bed as I have rubber mats. I then used half a bag a week after that.

Fantastic stuff although I don't use it anymore as it was really hard to get hold of.

Thanks for replies....I've emailed Megazorb too and they reckon about 10 bags for a full bed on a 12 x 12 stable. Good to know you can muck out like shavings...Dengie advised that medi bed should be completely mucked out everyday like straw.

Can anyone tell me though, does MZ actually look anything like shavings when its down? The reason I'm asking is if our YO looks in and it does like vaguely wood-like, I'll be asked to remove it!!

It looks more like cat litter than anything else! No chance of it being mistaken for shavings, at least not by anyone with decent eyesight.

Ta bebe!!

that saves me getting it all in, only to be told it has to go again!! They don't look that closely so should be ok!

I have just put a couple of bags down over rubber matting and boy could I feel it in the back of my throat afterwards!! My mare isn't actually in at night yet but she's been plodding in once a day for a feed and I have to say I can feel the dust in the air. Has anyone else noticed this or is it just me being a sensative little flower??!
