Well Rupert (13.2hh New Forest) is weighing in at 400kg at the moment but he hasn't been ridden for months due to my 'bump' and is circular, he would normally come in somewhere around 355kg at a slimmer weight (we both look pregnant at the moment..at least, unlike Rupert, I really am!) :o

I wouldn't have thought 250kg would be outrageously low for a slim, fit exmoor, I know a 13hh New Forest who comes in about 300kg.

You are using the 'pony' side of the tape aren't you? If like mine it has two sides then you might get a funny result using the horse side ;)

confused - is the 250kg what the weight tape says Happy is ? Or is it the weight that the web site suggests that size of pony should be ?

I know I found some websites with weight tables by height - possibly for feed/worming suppliers ? I just can't find them now

Happy (according to the guide) SHOULD be 300kg

but apparantly according to the measurement she is 200-250kg. But she hardly looks underweight from the picture *ahem*

I dont believe this measurement is reliable

Confused now too  I would have thought 200-250kg would be a bit light for a 13hh exmoor...250kg ok maybe but 200kg is very light..I assume my shetlands (9.3hh) are 150kg for worming...

Cross posted - sorry! Yep 300kg would sound about right...to be honest I would go by what she looks like and she looks very well so I wouldn't worry too much :)

your previous post said Happy was within 7kg of target weight - so what changed, was it just the tape ?

We got a new weight tape and found all the weight's "changed". We figured our old one was stretched with use ;)

But we always use condition scoring as well as the tape - and as you say, Happy looks fine in that sense.

So I would check you are using it right (the right side, not too tight etc). My mother always has it quite "snug", and I measure much looser... so even between people we get a difference. I go looser because we are trying to keep Duds and Fi's weight down, so I don't want to "under-measure" at all...

im just going to confuse you all....

yep, she was something like 293kg a few months ago (when she was FAT) so i didnt believe it anyway

now shes measuring about 250kg, and the other day 220kg :D

i think im just using it wrong, dont worry about it :D

thanks :)

Bare in mind that weigths tapes are hugely inaccurate for non-TB type horses. The weight tape makes Pink (a 15.2hh heavy cob) over 900kg  Thats more than some shires  She's about 650kgs -700kgs - a lot less.

The saddler the otherday said she's heard about a trial someone or other had done on weight tapes. They weighted 50 horses and ponies with the tape then found their actual weight time a set of industrial scales. Only one of the horses were within 10kgs of the tape's weight. Most were out by over 50kgs, some by 100kgs+ Therefore, they're not very accurate at all and can only really be used to check on changes in weight
