At our yard there is a combination of 29 riding school and livery ponies and horses and some are suspiciously losing chunks of their tails! We have a tail eater!

Who would you expect to be the culprit? A young(er) horse like a 2 yo foal or 4/5 yo cobs? My Stumpy has been accused of being an eater- accusations left, right and centre at the minute causing a bit of tension at the yard acutally.

And why do they do it?

Tail eating! I've never heard of that before. I would probably expect it to be a younger horse who is bored or any horse who is barn sour. :)

Do you have any sheep in the fields?
We do and the ponies have to have their tails plaited and then tied(like polo ponies) up to stop the sheep from getting at them  .

Nope, all horses.

I was informed that its a very babyish/foalie type behaviour...not too sure though
