Hi Everyone
I have my new horse arriving soon yipee!!! And I have a very silly question. Up until now I have always looked after my horses myself but this time I am moving onto a fabulous yard were I have the luxury of them putting in the morning feed and turning out for me. So the question is do I mix the feed with a bit of water as I would do normally and leave it overnight ready for them to put in the next morning (obviously covered), or do I leave the feed dry and let them mix???????????
Thanks

Hi Jiggy
I have the same at my yard. They will put in feed and turn out for me. I have to leave it completely mixed, ready and covered, outside the door.
Hope this helps, and that you enjoy your new yard.

Tricky one notpoodle re the hay. Sennie has dry hay and feed as he hates anything wet and won't eat it, so it doesn't arise for him.
As I remember when I had my old cob who did need soaked hay, they just fed and didn't put hay in in the morning. They would tip up a big bucket for the evening hay though if I was away and drag it in for him, but YM wont deal with soaked haynets on our yard.

I think maybe the best thing to do is ask the YO or YM. I'm sure they would have the answer. :)

Hi from what I've been told mixing feed with water and then leaving it could take the nutrients out of it. This is what I've been told and I'm not sure exactly how it works but people at ouir yard still do it.

I mix the feeds dry on an evening, and my step-mum adds water in the morning. I don't like leaving wet feed all night, but maybe I'm just fussy :D
At the last yard I worked at we had a couple of liveries that needed soaked hay morning and evening. We had a big bin near their stables and I would put the morning hay in to soak before I left for the night, and the evening hay in to soak on a morning. However, I was the only one at my yard that would deal with soaked hay (lots of other people objected to getting wet... it never bothered me, I was always soaking and filthy  ) and I know lots of places won't for various reasons. I always changed the water in the bin every day as well, as bits of hay and other nasties get in it. Some people just stick it in a bin and run a hose over it until all the hay is wet, then feed. Depends on your yard and how much soaking it needs.

I leave Ziz's feed dry and YO or whoever's feeding puts the water in. Just check with them, each yard's different.
