Hoof care?

My mare's hoofs look dry to me, kinda brittle?

She dosen't wear shoes and thought maybe it just has to do with the weather?

It's been kinda dry and now it's getting pretty cold out.

I don't do anything other than have them trimmed when they need it.

How exactly does a 'healthy' hoof look like? Should it be smooth?

Well i dont have shoes on either of my horses, my mare is fine with just trimming, but my gelding needs to have hoof supplements (biotin is what help hooves) If he isent on some type of hoof supplement his feet get brittle and crack, then become really uneven. I know there are hoof conditioners out there that are supposed to keep moisture in, but I dont use any on my horses.
