pony has a dust allergy. used to give her dengie alfa-a, the standard stuff with molassis on it. have changed to the hi-fi lite chaff now. i feed it pretty soggy/damp but was wondering if itd be better to go back to something less dusty (ie coated) instead?

The only time you cannot feed alfalfa is if a horse has cushings. If you are dampening it it should be ok.

The main differences between Alpha A and the Hi Fi Lite is A. there is alot more calories in Alpha (even the light version) and B. alpha provides more energy. They say the equivalent to a cool mix so about 9MJ/Kg.
Alpha is obviously pure Alfalfa whereas Hi Fi Lite is Alfafa mixed with chopped straw.

HiFi lite also has a molasses covering, just less than the normal dose :D
I would use HiFi for fatties or Alfa A for those who need a little more.

Alfa Oil is good- added linseed oil so slightly damp but no molasses @ artemis- dont know much about cushings but always hungry for knowledge. Why cant you feed alfalfa to cushings horse? something to do with high protein?

not worried about the weight (pony isnt very good at piling on the pounds!), mre about the dustiness.

artemis - Just wondering why because there's an article in one of this months horsey mags where Dengie advise an owner who's pony has cushings. They have advised her to use Alpha-A light.

From what I can remember from posts on here last year - there has been no clinical tests on how alfalfa effects cushing sufferers BUT it has been noted by many (mostly in the states where alfalfa is more commonly fed) that by removing it from the diet you see an improvement in the ponies condition, I have to say I agree, after reading this here last year I took our old boy off Alfa-A and cut his diet back as much as possible on sugar (something that also came up), he improved dramatically, not so much peeing, shed some of his very thick curly coat, was brighter and more alert. I will be continuing with him on this reviewed diet. Just a tip I also found feeding Brewers Yeast also helped further.
