Thinking of sitting it soon and want to see what's involved.
Thanks!

It would also be a good idea to get video of BHS stage 1 exam, as it shows you how / what to do on the day of the test etc. Also idea is to know more and be slightly better than just about so on the test knowledge / riding.
Good luck persevere with the BHS site, should be under Education link.

I had trouble yesterday on the BHS site too. None of the links to acrobat reader worked and eventually crashed my machine  Re-booted and all ok since :)

So Jojoba, are you going for stage 1? I got the Stage 1 book from Horse and Rider last week and have a Stage 1 video on the way from somewhere on ebay. Looking at the syllabus I can do quite a lot of the compulsory things but not as many of the supporting things.

I hope to be helping out at my RS soon so I can learn some of the horse care stuff.

Also still looking for a place near sheffield that does Stage 1 in evening classes, the closest so far is Brockholes Farm near Doncaster (http://www.brockholesfarm.co.uk/rc.htm) who do stage training on Wednesday evenings. Also I still worry that I am not a good enough rider to even start this yet, maybe I should just do the 'in at the deep end' thing!

Jojoba, I presume you'll be studying at Smeltings on a Saturday morning?

Ponylover88 - a couple of the staff on my yard just sat it. I asked one of them about it and she said it's pretty easy and mostly stuff you can teach yourself.
Raingodz - I asked my YO about it and she said I'll be fine with the riding side and we'll just brush up my pole work (I cant even remember the last time I did poles in a lesson), and she said my Stable Management will need recapping too but from what the girl I spoke to said it will most likely be work on feeding and shoeing that I need to touch up on. YO said I can train on our yard but Im considering trying out a different yard which does lessons and Stage 1 training simply because I think it may be a good idea to ride some new horses and see how another yard is managed. Ive ridden pretty much all the horses on our yard and kept horses there for 10yrs so it may benefit me I think to do the training somewhere else.
I was planning on starting a lesson on the other yard anyway, maybe once a month ish.

For those of you who gave me the syllabus, are those Acrobat files? Acrobat crashes my computer, thats why I cant get the syllabus off the BHS website.

Hi Jojoba, You can make google change acrobat docs to HTML, try this link for the HTML version:

As far as I know (which is not that much!) the only other RS in Sheffield that does BHS stage training is Snowdon Farm, who go up to level 3: http://www.snowdonfarmequestrian.co.uk/

Yeah Snowdon is where Im planning on going. Has a fairly good reputation and is owned by the sister of someone who works for my dad (or something :p) I think. I'll try that link, thanks for that.

Okay, need to brush up on rules of feeding, identifying feeds, rules of watering, how much and what to feed horses dependant on workload, fire and accident procedures. That's about it.

Is it me or is this just C Test? I sat about 12 weeks of training for my C test - knew it would come in handy (not that I can remember much of it!).

I have now watched the Stage 1 Exam video (that I got from ebay).

They did make a special point about being able to identify food types and how mch to feed, so a deffinate one for revision! They also are very keen health and safty, especialy how to lift heavy things (sacks of feed, bales of hay, buckets of water, etc).

The other thing they seemed to be very keen on was the personal turnout of the rider - looking smart and tidy, and not putting your hands in your pockets or crossing your arms!

I was pleased to see you get two different horses for the riding test, so they are willing to accept that you might not get on with one of them. Alot of the focus seems to be on the riders position and confidence.

The other thing they said was that if you say or do something wrong and then realise later you should let the examiner know and they will take your correction into account.

Deffinatly a project for next year for me I think, still need to improve my riding alot before then since they said that you should be in advace of level 1 riding when you take level 1 - I dont think that this will be a problem for you JOJOBA.

Ha ha - we did our mock exam at college recently and I got the smallest horse (about 14.2/14.3hh I reckon) for the first session. At the end they asked us all to moved along a position, and I ended up on the 18.2hh at the start of the line up! The reins looked a mile long and each rise seemed to last a full 5 minutes at first :p Really weird experience :)
