It looks like an unusual example of a frosted hip Appaloosa pattern.

I had kind of thought something like that (though I am by no means an expert on colour) but the fact that the colour is in one line sort of thing put me off a bit.

The horse is supposed to be pure QH.

If it's supposed to be a registered QH then maybe it's a skin rash???? :-) I'm just about sure that QH would NOT take this horse as registered if this is really a skin pigmentation thing. sylvia

If it's pure QH that puts a slightly different perspective on things. As far as I know the Appaloosa complex doesn't occur in QH breeding.

It's more than likely a skin condition causing it in that case; there are several that result in loss of pigment (and therefore white markings), like vitiligo. I don't know anywhere near enough about skin conditions to hazard a guess what it is in this case though.

It looks similar to a skin condition this chesnut from my yard has, he has it on his near shoulder and even more on his off hip. He's pure draught but does have 4 white socks and a large white blaze. It has always been there but got more visible as he aged, with his summer coat its less visible.

I seem to recall years ago reading an interesting article about Appaloosa patterned cropouts from QH stock. It's very rare, but some Appy patterned horses did get mixed in to the general ranch horse breeding stock population at one time, and a very few minimally expressed Apps were registered as QH and bred on until one threw a more visibly patterned offspring! (Which was the horse the article was about in my fuzzy memory. I think it might have been an Appaloosa bred magazine I read about it in.) It's more likely that this horse's color is caused by something else of course!
