Lessons in jumping?

I want to gently move my horse along and get him confidently jumping. Now I haven't really jumped for over 10 years do you think I should get some lessons on jumping first? Even getting him to go over poles on the ground he leaps and I don't think I make things comfortable for him when I'm on his back. He has a problem with jumping and I don't want to make it worse for him

Yes, taking some lessons on another horse in order to get your jumping position back would be a great idea, for the reasons you mentioned.
