Since I stopped riding 3 years ago, I've been going to the gym, but now I'm starting out again I'd like my workout to complement my riding - does anyone have any tips?

I did the same thing actually! I made an appointment with one of the personal trainer people (it was free at my gym at uni) and told him that I wanted to strengthen my riding muscles...he had actually ridden in the past, so he was pretty good about knowing what to show me! I worked a bit on the treadmill and cross trainer for my cardio, and then he had me do those machines where you push your thighs together while sitting, and also had me do the opposite machine where you push your thighs out...I did the "bottom" workout where you lift the weight from the back of your leg (I can't think of any other way to describe it!) and I also did a machine for the calves, and one for the quads. I'm obviously not a fitness expert, so I would definitely recommend seeing a personal trainer for advice! :)

YOGA..I can not say enough good things about it.
I lift weights Upper body and do core work..abs and back.., and then do the yoga..
With riding 4-5 days per week I was finding that my legs got plenty strong..but I was also getting plenty stiff..always in the same position and always using the same muscles..this really helps me feel more balanced and fit. :p

My regular workout routine includes core body strengthening (yoga, pilates, and work on an exercise ball), upper body work since I don't get enough of it when riding, and 30 minutes of aerobic conditioning (I generally run). I also include plenty of stretching.

When I do weights, I place more focus on abs, back, arms, and shoulders. I do include some weight training with my legs, but my legs get quite a workout from running and riding. Plus, I incorporate strengthening exercises in the saddle (working in galloping position, posting without stirrups, leg lifts, etc).
