Larri,
You mentioned in the 'buying iberian horse' thread that your youngster can do full pass. What's that? :D Sounds great!

God bless,
Janey

Lo' Janey

in half pass the horse is moving primarily forwards, yet sideways always still leading with the forehand. Full pass is sideways - ideally no forward movement. Its a very suppling movement not
( to the best of my knowledge ) used in any dressage tests, but opens the shoulders and quarters and gives them a good stretch
You must be careful that the legs are crossing in front and that you aren't pushing the horse back into the exercise - back is bad!

In working equitation tests the horses have to walk sideways along the length of a pole and that's the movement that gets the best score rather than swinging the front end a bit then the back end.

Hope that makes sense - I need some sleep!

Larri :)

At one of the riding schools where I had lessons we (virtual beginners) did "full pass". I was under the impression that the concept originated at that school - it was something my teacher learned from her grandfather I think. I never thought to hear the expression again so I'm very interested in the thread.

Wow, sounds very beneficial if it's even more suppling than half pass! If it's only sideways, with no forward movent, does that mean it's only done in 'walk'? And why is it not in dressage tests? Too difficult?

'Lo!

I've only ever done it in walk, I know a few horses who are probably capable of trotting through it - It is quite demanding. I've got no idea why not in dressage tests, along with a few of the other odd moves I know!

How about travers, renvers, voltes and demi voltes, or a passat ?

Off to check if I can remember how to do any of them!

I thought Travers and renvers were in dressage tests?! Shows how much in depth knowlege I have on competitive dressage! eesh.... They really should be though! As for voltes and demi voltes.... errr... I have a vague idea about what they are, but I'm not sure! Aren't they like a pirouette?
See why I don't like competitive dressage? Well, not that I hate it, but, it's so restrictive! All these funny moves the riders are missing out on! I can't wait to try everything!

Larri, (or anyone!) please can you explain all these rarer movements? I think they are fascinating!

Full pass is used in Western riding quite a bit- called a side pass though. It is also used by my chums in the Mounted police to push crowds sideways- it is indeed a good suppling exercise but is frowned upon in the mainstream dressage world as it is not enough 'forward'- ( well, it woudln't be if it is fully sideways!).

Yes travers and renvers are in tests - silly me, sorry! I have to admit to still confusing the two - my instructors used to go mad at me getting the wrong bend every time.

From what I was taught a volte is pretty much a 5 - 10 metre circle, demi volte a half circle - it's just an artsy fartsy way of saying it! Passat is a wonderful move to watch and fun to ride.

In displays and formation riding with a few riders doing it together it's brilliant.

Canter large in school, canter half pass across diagonal, continue round in counter canter and along next long side you almost pirouette round but only till you're facing the other way to go back to canter on the right leg! Simple but stunning.

Confused????!

Why are they so keen on Piaffe then? They are picky! If it works the horses muscles and shows off a horses brilliance; they should at least have it in some tests!

I think I get the idea.... you'll have to demonstrate it for me one day! Haha! :p

Suppose they have to make one concession to collection Janey, although one of our GP riders was overheard last year to say that collection was no longer necessary in GP competition dressage. I would largely agree with her, with the exception of piaffe and canter pirouettes, and to an extent passage- the rest is all power and sideways sweep, almost more lie the movements are being ridden in medium paces! Not that when this is well done it doesn't look impressive and stunning- it is when it is badly done that it looks anything but art.
