Any one else use hydrogen peroxide for basic wound cleaning?

No. The problem with hydrogen peroxide is that it also damages the healthy cells (keratinocytes and fibroblasts) that are needed for wound healing. I prefer to flush with a mild saline solution.

http://www.newrider.com/forum/images/smilies/eek.gif No, as Karin says it damages other tissues especially if you get the concentration wrong.
Current recommendations are to flush with sterile water/saline and only use other preparations when recommended by the vet. Wound powders and creams can slow down the healing time so are not recommended now either unless under advisement by the vet. Powders are worse than creams.

i agree you should flush a wound with sterile soloution , and yes it can damage healthy cells but only if you dont throughly rinse afterwards.I use the stuff you get from the chemist as it is in a correct concentration already and i only use it on dirty wounds that need a realy good clean.:D

you wouldnt be useing hydrogen peroxide if you had seen it do what ive seen it do!! im studying chemical engineering and its not nice stuff at all! it will also bleach all the hair around the wound, sting like mad and kill off the top layer of good cells even if you do rinse it properly!! why do you think people use it to bleach hair with! not nice and for goodness sakes dont leave any on your or the horses skin! im also pretty sure (from what i can remember from the hazchem cards) that it is carcinogenic (causes cancer)!
i use warm water and hibiscrub (very diluted this is advice from the vet) either that or contact lense solution of which i have masses, but with Rians wounds it has been hibiscrub and boiled water!
