Uneven rhythm to walk

The horse that I'm sharing has a great tendency to rush its gaits - walk ends up as 1,2....3,4. I've tried letting him have a really long rein but it doesn't seem to make any difference. I've tried to hold him with my seat but again he seems to please himself.

Any ideas??

Try gently pulling back with the rains also. If he still rushes, then think about youself. A horse that I ride does the same thing and he does it when he is nervus or rushed. Are you making him feel that way?

Try slowing down your seat. Have you ever done Freestyle? Try riding him to music to get your seat in time with the music. Works VERY well and is GOOD fun!

I haven't tried riding to music - must give it a go. Unfortunately his gait isn't good at lunge or with his owner riding either (I've been told that his rushing is as a result of how he's been ridden by his owner in the past).
