View Full Version : Good Hack - Mean Looks :0(

I eventually plucked up the courage to take my cob out for another hack yesterday. Why courage? I hear you say!
Well I have voices in my head :p one tells me that nasty things will happen to me if I go on a hack (Me and horse will fall in a dyke, get hit by a tractor, horse bolts home etc), the other voice is telling me that I have been on several hacks with said cob and I arrived back home intact and calm (having actually enjoyed it)
Feeling sick, I listened to my second voice and went out - and he behaved impeccably (as always  ) and we cantered along the riverbank :D . On the way back however, I stopped on the country lane to let a juggernaut go by and he was a good boy and then 2 builders' lorries came by and so I pulled off the road and was given a means stare by them, interpreted to say 'You shouldn't be on the road'!
I often get mean stares when riding my coloured cob - I think people think I am a gypsy!

At least one of you had manners then
Glad you enjoyed yourself, nice to see you listening to the sensible voice.

I like Polo pooing all over the road on the new estates with people looking, I am gagging for someone to say something as it has took loads of feilds up and is ruining our riding area, as far as I am concerned I am sharing the road with them, not them sharing it with me, if they didn't keep ruining our countryside with new roads and housing/industrial sites we wouldn't need to ride on the road.

Glad you enjoyed your hack. I know what you mean about mean stares - some of the drivers on the estate near our yard give us black looks - like - you shouldn't be here you idiot - you've no right etc. Makes ya quite cross. Well said Pedantic - if they didn't keep building we wouldn't need to ride on the bloomin roads.

Well, I'm quite fortunate as I live in the country just over the road from the river so I've only got to go on a quiet road for about 1/4 mile - but still, horses were here before cars

It is heart warming when solo hacks go without any hiccups. ;) I too wish more motorists had a little patience when passing horses. :(

I know what you mean about those voices! Looking forward to something is always worse than doing it.

Oh, I have those voices too - so glad I'm not the only one! Am always relieved when I get home and have survived another hack! And my TB is as good as gold, he's never bolted or done anything scary, it's just me being a complete wuss! I suffer from a severe case of 'what if ?-itis' and an overly vivid imagination.
Glad your boy was good for you - I find if you hack regularly the voices get quieter :D - if I leave it weeks between hacks, I'm a nervous wreck again.
Keep up the good work!

well done - i suspect the mean looks is the coloured cob thing - i often get people looking down on Rosie cob who is hairy, common and wonderful! with her fat mum sitting on top, we are a right pair of big bottomed girls and we don't care! her mane is long, her tail is tidy but she is unclipped and muddy - we only groom what we have to and our tack would not pass the inspection on the household cavalry programme! we may not win at Olympia but we enjoy our rides out and see bits of the countryside where no one else seems to go - we once went out for 3 hours and never saw a soul! just some deer, pheasants, rabbits and squirrels.
get out there and enjoy it! listen to voice 2!

we are in a small village near chichester, just off the A27. We have access to the south downs way, and lots of forestry tracks, so we can do many 2-4 hour routes by dumping Rosie at various car parks - you tend to find that once you have half a mile from any of the entrances you hardly see a soul for miles and miles. it is incredibly beautiful and peaceful. the only disadvertnage is that the ground is very stony and hard so in summer it is walking only, you can only do a bit of faster work in winter.

Next time you get mean stares for being on a splodgy horse ask "Is it because I is coloured?" :D :D

I have to battle with the voices too, but I am getting better and I have discovered the fun feelings I used to have when hacking out. It has taken years for me to do this again.
congratulations to you for your lovely hack and you cantered!!
I am enjoying my riding life so much again I have bought a new horse - an unstarted youngster. Am I mad?
