Hi there

well after a very long break from Horses 10 yrs since i last rode and nearer 20 since i rode on a regular basis im back, for the last year or two ive been thinking i must go for a ride, well today i did, poped down to my local Stables Eastminster nr Hornchurch the first thing that struck me was that horse smell you all no what i mean just lovley, although i grew up around horses as we had stables in my family i though it best to start as a novice again, i had a half hour lesson of walking turning sitting and standing trott with some basic skills to boot, think i done ok and never had any problems and begain to feel quite comfatable by the end of the lesson, im off again next Sunday so cant wait...

Hi Suggs and welcome. You are SO lucky.... I had my first half-hour lesson in July for 20 years and couldn't walk for the next 10 days! My daughter told me she had never seen my face so red after all that concentration!!!

I smiled as I read your comment about the smell.... it gets ya, doesn't it?

Be warned.... now you have done it once, the "passion" will return with a vengeance!!! Since July I have had two share-horses and now own one of them - a big hairy irish cob mare. We are having great fun getting to know each other.

Also be warned that New Rider is VERY addictive.... ;)

Welcome to New Rider, about the horse smell, I can't smell it at the stables, but it sure hits you, when you get in the car.

thanks for the kind welcome, luckly i dout i will suffer with the normal riding aches and pains as im very fit and supple due to another obsesion of mine (Karate) im riding again next Sunday and hope to keep it up in the new year, not to sure were im gona go with it though, i mean after ive had a load of lessons and im back upto a good level again not sure whats out there for me, to be truthfull i cant really own a Horse as i just dont have enough spare time to muck out daily etc and dont think i could justify paying full livery, im also self employed and normaly train 5-6 days a week after work (Karate/Gym) its only Sunday that im normaly free so im always on the go, maybe i could get some sort of share with someone or just go out on regular hacks with the school, i realised how much i missed it today though really glad i took the plunge, my dogs were going nutts when i got home sniffing me lol....

Hi Suggs and welcome. Looks like you're hooked. Know what you mean about the smell. As soon as I walk into our tackroom I'm in heaven what with the leather, feeds, etc. If you don't have time to own, what about a loan/share. It'll probably work out cheaper than weekly lessons. Keep us posted on how you get on.

Welcome to NR! Oh, I'm not alone then with the smell thingy - do you know, I had my first hack in 21 years or so the July before last and the smell as I entered the yard just hit me and I couldn't believe how it felt - I was immediately hooked of course........:D

Hi Suggs and welcome :)

I totally know what you mean about the smell too :p It's like a warm, sweet and comforting welcome back. I returned after 30 years out of the saddle having enjoyed a rather wild childhood riding at any opportunity, often without tack, but never being properly taught to ride. We actually stopped riders out hacking and asked for a ride; surprisingly I recall many dismounted and lead us for a short distance! How cool and kind were those riders!!

I left my gloves in the car the other day after a lesson and the next day after work the smell (perfume) hit me as I got into the car to go home... mmmm, I put them up to my face and smelled in deeply only to see a colleague smiling and nodding to greet me as she got into her car next to mine! LOL :o :o

wow looks like ive started something with the smell lol. its funny as i was driving to the stables i was thinking am i mad getting into ridding again with all the other stuff i do regulary, i parked up and steped into the yard, the smell just hit me you have to be a horse person to understand it, my wife just thinks im mad, but that smell just got me and everything just flashed back, as for a weekly loan or share still dout id have the time to commit at the moment, i cant really garentee to give up a day or two every week, ill probley be better just going for the odd hack once or twice a month with the school for now and get to meet some people and see what comes up, although went to my local Decathalon sports store today they sell tack and riding gear i was sniffing around the bridals. and lunges lol think ive got it bad...
