Hi I am asking this question on behalf of a friend. We were talking about this subject this afternoon and niether of us really knew so I offered to find out.

So please someone put us out of our curious misery:D

If a grey mare is bred to a pally stallion what colour could the foal be? The mare was born chestnut, went rose grey as she got older and is now currently a dapple grey, she has chestnut in her mane and tail. We were just curious if the chestnut in her genes could produce a pally foal:) if she was bred to a pally stallion.

There's a 50% chance of a pally foal from that combination. Mare and stallion are both ee (chestnut base) so can only pass on e for chestnut.... so foal will also be ee. The stallion has cream, but only one copy - so there's a 50/50 chance he'll pass that on, resulting in a pally foal.

The problem is the grey - if she has one grey gene, there's also a 50% chance the foal will go grey, and if she has two grey genes, it will definitely go grey, no matter what the base colour.
