Went to take my boys neck rug off tonight to brush his mane and a chunk of mane was just matted solid, so I went to tease it and it just started all coming out, huge handfuls of it!:eek: its just a little section near the wither at the moment and now that all the hair has gone he's bald and it looks all pink and sore !:( also its driving him mad because he finds it very itchy and tries to rub his neck on the gate etc, it looks like he has sweet itch or some thing but its the wrong time of year isn't it?? also he has had his neck rug on full time for the last month so no insects can get at him. I went and powdered him and rug with a louse/mite powder as I think it might be that as he has only the bottom of his mane falling out, further up his neck he's fine, what do u think it could be?? also its been raining quite alot and when he rolls and stuff it gets quite damp in side the n rug, would damp cause this? or is it more likely to be mites/louse?

this happened with my Harry because of his neck rug, it was because he was to hot, change his rug to one withot the hood and see how he gets on. Maybe the hood was rubbing him which has maybe made it sore?

almost definitely the rug. petal's came out in handfuls when she wore one briefly.

i don't think your little boy is getting enough indapmide or loratadine in his diet. this will not only make his hair fall out, but in some cases there have been reports in horses collapsing then dying. please do something quickly before its too late, good luck

My boys manes at the withers mat and sometimes fall out when they are rugged .
As long as your sure he's in good health and on a balanced diet and not showing any other signs of ill health, i'd change his rug and protect the area that is bald now so it dose not get sore .
If your worried about getting cold (no neck rug) give him some more fiber , he will keep warm from the inside out
Good luck !!

Loratadine is an antihistamine but ive not heard of the other.
It was a valid question. I wasnt aware horses needed a regular supply in their diet. Silly me.

Loratadine is used to relieve hay fever and allergy symptoms, including sneezing;
Indapamide is a diuretic (water pill) that is primarily used for the treatment of high blood pressure.

sometimes its the movement of the rug across the withers while the horse walks that will rub away at the hair and skin, I put bibs under my outside rugs as they cover the wither area too so just takes some of the friction away.

it is more then likely the high neck rug, if possible you need to get it off as often as possible!

Have taken the neck rug off at the moment but it has spread further up the neck since yesterday because he has been itching it on the fence/gate now he has the neck rug off!:rolleyes: what should i do? thought about washing the area with a bit off hibiscrub and warm water? also since I have taken his muzzle off he has just bloated right out:rolleyes: so was wondering weather I should take rug off all together to make him use up some fat reserves or get a no fill rug as he hasn't much coat??:confused:

give it a few days to settle - if he is still itching then, then get the louse powder out. this time of year is right for them as they are warm under rugs so the eggs hatch - we\ve had to treat 4 of ours this weekend.
