i finally pursuaded my mum to come out on a mini hack with me yesterday on her horse. he was a bit bolshy to tack up, but was fine for my mum to get on (and off and then on again:rolleyes: ), he was fine walking up the road, we let them have a little eat at the top of the hill, then took them back home, he was fine down the hill, but on the stretch home he was bobbing and looking like he might bolt.
he was a completly differnt horse when we went back up to put them away, we had moved the fence back tho, so he had a full belly:D
i told my mum to sit up and flex his head and neck from side to side to keep his attention. hes not normally like that, its normally my girl who bobs, but she was a star.
anybody got any ideas to calm him down? i think mum is finally going to get some lessons soon, and even my dad said hed learn to ride him if that what it takes (hes very against murphy going).

is he getting as much work or turnout as usual? if not could just be over fresh - plus the colder weather tends to liven them up

hes turned out all day and only comes in at night. he is a bit fresher because sinc ive broken my collar bone mum is nervous to ride him and i cant ride as much, plus hes too strong for me to ride while im healing (and mum doesnt want me to ride him as hes the one who dumped me). hes been lunged and walked out in hand when hes not been ridden.
hes fed almost a scoop of chaff and tiny bit of sugarbeet.

tasha, you did the right thing telling your mum to ask for changing neck flexion. asking them to leg yield is also another good diversion tactic. i agree with Big Ears, it may well be this colder weather. toby was high as a kite for a while  we used to use a herbal calmer on toby with some success (wendals valerian free calmer blend), might be worth trying?

i think i might still have half a tub of naf calmer somewhere, i might try that.
it was his first hack away from the field for a while, so im not suprised he was fresh, but im not too keen on the threatening to bolt. mum has a horrible habbit of leaning forwards when he does something, so i have to be there to tell her to sit up, otherwise im sure shed have been off his head a few times.
i did get her up on maddie for a walk up the part where he was silly so she had a good experience there.
