As I have mentioned on another thread I am helping look after my friends ponies as well as my own as her Dad is terminally ill.

Had to get the vet (who was coming to do tetanus shots anyway) to look at my friends miniature mare. She is severely lame on her front leg.. it's all swollen and she can barely walk. Laminitis/abcess was ruled out. Vet gave painkiller and penacillin by injections as he thought it was an infection. She is also lame on a back leg as it's tired from trying to take the weight.

The vet stayed around to watch her trying to walk and told me he thinks she has a fracture - not an infection as her lameness is too severe  and if she isn't bearing weight on her leg by tommorrow they will be doing an x-ray at the field. Then depending on what type of fracture it will need surgery (if it's a type of fractured that can be fixed) or she will be put to sleep.

The vet said he really does think it is a fracture and that it doesn't look good. Thank goodness she is insured!

I had to give this news to my friend and she already has so much to deal with.

Any experience with fractures?

I don't have any experience in fractures (luckily enough!) but I feel sorry for the horse and you all! That's so terrible! :(

2 horses i know had hairline cracks in one of their hind legs. both were operated on with success. if the pony is allowed sufficient rest and the fracture is allowed to fully stabilise then she can recover. of the 2 horses i know with a similar thing, 1 was PTS because the owner brought him back into work far to quickly and the fracture totally went again. but as this is a minature pony, i can't imagine work will be an issue. fingers crossed, hope the fracture can be operated on.

Molly was kicked and broke her splint bone - originally thought it might also be the hock. She made a full recovery and is totally sound on it.

Hopefully you may be lucky with the fracture if that is what it is and as it is a small light pony then the chances of it mending are better than a heavy horse.

Well I went to see her at 6.30am and she was walking on it! There was an amazing difference, but the leg is still very swollen. Vet couldn't come today as he had 2 emergency visits to do. I had to go with my friend to pick up another jab, and I gave it to her  ! It was pretty easy and the Mare didn't mind at all!

The vetis coming first thing in the morning so fingers crossed!

I'm helping bring a 17hh TB back into work after recovering from a fractured pelvis. He was sound after about 18 months field rest. The injury was most likely caused by playing around with his buddies in the field.

Vet came out today and was amazed at how much better she was. He has decided it is a severe infecion in her upper leg. We have to continue giving her injections and bute for the rest of this week.

She was a very lucky mare!
