Hi, I am new to this list and just wanted to introduce myself and was also wondering if there is someone else like me who is older and has rekindled our love for horses. I am 48 yrs woman and was kind of talked into owning these 2 horses by my sister who just bought them on a whim not thinking about the care and ownership responsibilities. I was in a dream as the horse she had bought for me was my dream horse as a child and I am not a child anymore but am so in love with this guy I let my sister put me into the situation. I owned horses before and am experienced with responsibilities and training , the problem is my sister thought I was suppose to do it all and her to just get the pony ride when ever she felt like it.
Now comes the rest of the story!
I could see her horse not getting the attention and his feet were not being tended to and got thrush and I believe this horse was in pain. I became the bad guy doing the treatment on this barn sour horse. I then tried to get on her horse to work him out and he related me to that pain and would not let me mount him. I became inpatient with him getting away with walking away while I tried to get on him so I pulled him up to a mounting step and I just jumped on him and he said NO Way and tried to bucked me off as I was bringing my leg around him then I tried to bale off of him when I saw him running us both into a real danger, as I was half off he bucked again and I bailed and am now in bed with 2 pelvic fractures and 3 broken ribs. While I have been mending my husband and I moved the horses to my home. My sister sold her horse and my horse does not do well by himself and so I aquired another horse to give my guy company, and this horse is a little older then my Sierra. His name is Hafati. They both are arabian and yes I have my hands full but I lucked out as they really get along extra well.
I am thinking I can ride Hafati until I reestablish my strength, so I am able to ride my guy of whom I have spent alot on good training and he does so well . Sierra is only 4 and is so very smart and does tricks for me. I just am very pleased with them both. My Sierra is young but we really click, but I worry now that he has to wait on me healing and might get a little more frisky. I plan to get him into the round pen as soon as I can build one as I can at least work him there while my bones heal as I think I can do that sooner than using the lunge lead.
Now for my question at the moment , I am really just curious if there is any other adults finding themselves making dreams come true and riding later on in life Or am I as crazy as this sounds so far. I would love to hear from others who ride that is starting over again at my age. Thanks for reading and I hope I can find others like me out there.
Thanks, Pam, Sierra, Hafati

Hi Pam and welcome:) Yes, you do sound crazy, but in a very good way.;) I'm so sorry to hear about your bone breaks, and would like to strangle your sister (no offence to you, who've clearly been fantastic:D ).
I am the same age as you, and like you rode when I was a child, but only bought my first horse age 40. Like you, I think I was probably crazy, but I'm so so glad I did. I now have a 15hh bay section d called Seneca (Sennie). He's just lovely. Last night I went up to the yard. He'd been brought in by the yard owner, and greeted my footsteps like he'd won the lottery:D He then came over to the stable door and nuzzled and slobbered over my cheek for a couple of minutes (well OK, I was doing some of the nuzzling too;) ) before we got on with things. He's such an adorable horse, and its times like that that make me so glad I've gone back to riding and taken on horse ownership, time consuming and expensive though it is.
I wish you all the best, coiffure, and I'm sure eventually once you've healed, it will be worth it for you. By the way, I love your optimistic attitude, a lot would have given up with your injuries. :D :D

Hi and welcome! I do hope your broken bones heal soon. It doesn't seem to have put you off and you're obviously more suited to horse ownership than your sister who seems to have acted on a whim. Good luck with your horses and keep us posted. Like Cazrider, I have a 15hh Section D called Misty (pictured). I got her when I was 43 and my friends thought I was made, but I've literally wanted a horse since I was 10 but didn't have the opportunity when I was a child. I'm certainly making up for it now!
Look forward to your posts (and some pictures!)

Hi welcome to NR:) Your horses sound lovely, I look forward to seeing some pics:)
I have returned to the equine world after a break due to pregnancy and moving countries:rolleyes: :) anyway last year my husband bought me my dream horse - a friesian stallion who is four and is quite a character!
I am having an absolute ball and enjoying every minute of being a horse owner again. My confidence in my abilites is growing daily - there was a time when I thought OMG what have I got myself into. Lucky for me Frits is a darling and we have quite a bond. I do a lot of ground work with him, and will restart him under saddle next year and hopefully by the end of next year we would have competed in our first dressage shows, very basic ones that is:D At the moment we have done breed shows and a Liberty Competition and right now he has been doing stud duties so no comps until Feb next year:)

Hello and welcome to NR! Hope your injuries heal soon:) I'm 36 and bought my first horse in April this year - I had a few lessons / hacks as a child and hadn't ridden since I was 16 then suddenly at 34 decided (on a holiday in Cornwall) to take the plunge and book a hack. OH and I immediately became hooked and when we got home booked lessons and its just snowballed from there!!! It has been my life long dream to own my own horse - and sometimes I still can't believe its come true. I am so lucky also in that my husband is addicted to them as I am - he has a TB gelding and I have a connie x mare. Getting up in the dark / being broke most of the time / smelling strange most of the time / being permanently tired - thats nothing, when I see my beautiful mares face come to greet me in a morning (she really is gorgeous;) ) it makes it all worthwhile:D Its been the most exhausting but rewarding 8 / 9 months of my life so far!!! OH is completely nuts about his horse too - I'm afraid we've just turned into a couple of horse-geeks:p :D All our old friends avoid us.......maybe its the smell:p :D
Look forward to reading your posts on here!

I can see already we all know that you all have the undying love that I experience every time I go out my back door and see both of their ears peak up over the stall to see me and then to run out to say hi.
I went out one day with my walker to see my Sierra and to show him I was injured. My husband got him out of his stall and I asked for him to give me the lead, he was very upset with me but, well its hard to say no and he knows it is not worth the fight<grin>.
Let me tell you that it was a Kodak moment as that darn horse is as much in love with me as I am with him, He sniffed my walker and I said good boy, and he sat there and judged up our boundaries so he would not hurt me. I said come on lets take a walk, and he was so careful of each step. My husband looked up at me and said That darn horse really loves you. I never felt so special in my life, except for marrying my husband and having my children. It is such a blessing. So now, my job for therapy is to go out after my husband feeds them in the morning and I walk out with my walker and let them out of their stalls to a small 1\2 acre pasture. Of course I bring treats for them . I then get the joy of watching them run like the wind to get out that energy. Well to ALL I can truely say, What A Life!!! I couldn't be happier.
As far as the smell, all I can say is, its the smell of roses to me.
Thank You so much!!! I feel very happy to meet you all! Sincerely, Pam

Big Hi from me too.... and a Get Well Soon (aka "Get Back On Soon)!
Horse mad as a child, finally bought my own within a few months of starting full time work as a teenager, sold him for love! Turned my back on horses for twenty-two years popping out children and PAYING FOR THEM!!! Had ONE riding lesson this July and the floodgates re-opened.........
At 42, am now proud owner of gorgeous safe, gentle (and very tolerant!) irish cob mare and I'm reliving my childhood, it's FAB! :D
Know EXACTLY where you are coming from!! ;)
All the best and welcome to THE BESTEST horsey website!!

Hi there, and welcome!
There's lots of us mature folks getting back into horses. (it's never really dies does it? Just kind of lies dorment, until you suddenly hear a nicker)
I'm 38 and spent the last three years doing lessons so I could buy my own but wound up leasing one instead. :)
I think your sister is irresponsible and I'm happy she let you take them over. There's two things (well many many more actually) that you don't ever do on a whim.. Decide to buy a horse or become a parent. = ) I seriously consider getting a horse every bit as important a decision as deciding to get pregnant.

Welcome Coiffure to this completely addictive forum! I didn't have riding lessons as a child although I've wanted them all my life-had my first one on my 44th birthday as a present from my husband, and am now a grand veteran of 6 lessons  and am completely hooked! I thought I must be the oldest woman in the world just learning to ride until I came on here and found others in a similar situation. When I joined the forum a few weeks ago someone said on my 'welcome' thread 'And now the horse bug bites deep' and it's so true! Sorry to hear of your injuries - boy were you unlucky there - and hope you are healing really quickly. Post us some pictures of your horses when you can :)

Welcome and get well soon. Sounds like you have a special bond with your horse! I got my mare a few years ago at age 42, fullfilling a life long dream of finally owning a horse. She's wonderful and it's a fabulous feeling to share with these gorgeous creatures. I'm really trying to figure out if I can afford a second one!
Hope you can post some pics of your guys!

Hi Mary, you know... that man of yours must be truly awesome to give gifts like that. Mine took me to the tack store for sweetest day this year to buy me a new helmet. I had a show a few days after and he mentioned a new helmet might look really nice. I kissed him on the spot for being so smart and helping me think. hahaha
Men that understand (and feed) our obsession are worth their weight in gold. :) I'm happy to hear you have one too. hahaha
