Jsut been given a bag of senior mix by Spillers because the top ripped, would it hurt to feed a bit in with the feed I give my mare, shes only 11 a good doer only gets HiFi and fruit and veg at night (apart from haylage) i was only thinking of putting a handful in as an extra treat

I think that you need to ask yourself if she really needs it. If she's not on hard feed at the moment and is doing well then I can't see any point in giving hard feed just because you got it for free. Apart from anything it could cause behavioural problems (see my reference to our 'Pasture Mix' episode in another thread).

Why not donate it to an animal sanctuary or an RDA yard instead?

If you do decide to feed it then look at the label and see what it contains before feeding it. Also, make sure that you introduce it VERY slowly as drastic changes in the diet can very easily end up as colic!

Yeah I agree with the above post, if she doesn't need it why give it to her? I am sure an animal sactuary or animal control would LOVE to have it!

IMO if your horse is a good dooer I wouldn't feed a senior mix as they tend to be made for older horses (I know it's called senior!) who may have trouble keeping weight on and therefore may balloon your horse up!

I echo everyone else there maybe another more willing person who would benefit from it.
