Weaning

What would happen if you did not wean a foal? Would it happen on its own like in the wild? At what age would the foal stop taking milk? I'm just interested after reading another post.

The mother would decide when.. my friends mare stopped at 12 months.

we have a mother and her 5 month old foal in our field (obviously the foal isnt weaned yet)and the mother is starting to push her foal away. i think the mother is probably in foal again, because she hasnt been in our field for very long so we're not sure
