I brought my mare Duchess home on Sunday night, only to discover the poor thing has got a bad case of rain scald. I've been treating it the last few days, but its quite difficult to get at all the scabs, and to get the iodine wash to the infected area. If I clip her out will it hurt her? She has a very thick winter coat. She has been in her stable all week (except for turnout in arena for a couple of hours a day) out of the weather and mud and seems quite happy there.

if she's still scabby, i expect it'd be very sore to clip her. if she is in,then just scrub her as much as you need to - it doesn't matter at this stage about her being wet, it's more important to get rid of the scabs. when the scabs are gone and she is just bald on the bits, then it might work to clip her so the air can get ot it and let the hair grow back healthily.

for scabs like this you can soften them so they will fall off so that it hurts her less.
i use Barrier Hygiene Hoof to Heel mudfever cream - it is very greasy and if you massage it liberally onto the scabs, they will either come off immeidately or within a few days and it doesn't hurt the horse as much - plus you then can see the clean healed skin underneath. it will also act as a barrier to the rain/wet

I used muddy marvel scab removal cream, but I'd say only 50% are gone, if even that. I think I've treated most of the newly infected ones, but there are a lot of older ones remaining. I'd love to clip her out to let the air at it properly to heal and prevent reoccurence, but I think I'll have to wait a while.
She has been an angel for me while I treat it. I just hope the other two lunatics on the farm at home dont get it (their coats arent as thick).
