Hi a little advice please

I had the vet out to my boy on Tues as he was quite lame on his front end due to having his shoes taken off a few weeks before. Vet told me to get his shoes back on but my farrier can't come out until next week. I don't know what to do about exercising him. I gave him some can't remember it's a shachet and it's white and green begins with D a bit like bute I'm told. Is this the right thing to do? I only have 2 left should I get more off the vet?

Thanks

I suppose it depends if the vet said to use the stuff, on wether you should get more or not.
I think I would leave him off work untill he gets shoes on and is not lame

if he were mine, i'd limit turnout (to reduce any pain and stop his feet cracking up) and keep on with a low dose of the painkillers the vet gave him. i wouldn't even consider riding/exercising til the shoes are back on and he's 100% sound without painkillers.

Why not phone the vets surgery and speak to one of the vets or nurses, they should be able to pull up your horses record on the computer and give advice over the phone to you. If you then need further pain killers, you can always go and get them from the vets yourself and carry on giving them until your boy sees the farrier.
Would reiterate but limiting turnout and not exercise or ride at all until you do have his feet sorted out. There is a lot of truth in the saying 'no foot, no horse'
Hope all works out ok.
Why not talk and discuss things with your farrier as well. What is the problem he is sore etc and has not taken to being bare foot. If it is a matter of strenthen the hoof horn, then perhaps consider a supplement to help build up good healthy horn growth over the next 6 nine monthes and then consider bare foot again next autumn, but do this with your farrier and work together.
Good luck

Can you get some of those pads that barefooters use? Their intended use was originally for laminitics I believe to relieve the pressure.

do you have some spare cash lying about..?
i know it's tough around this time of year, but buying easyboots or something simular is WELL worth it.
we're getting some more Easyboot Epics (they're actually cheaper than most, approx. £78 for us).. they helped my boy on his barefoot transition, and he had Seriously underrun heels to begin with.

tbh, if you want your horse to stay barefoot then i'd suggest getting a barefoot trimmer (as opposed to farrier's pasture trim) and some boots.
(though i'm not sure how long you intended to be barefoot..?)

for more help check out http://www.enlightenedequitation.com and head to the barefoot board ^.^

Just got my vet bill £60 for telling me he needs how shoes back on then I've got to get his shoes back on a further £50 which I hadn't budgeted for this month oh and did I mention Christmas it likes to all come at once!

I guess he can have a few more days off role on next week.
