ive been struggling a bit to get weight on my girl. when i got her nearly a year ago she looked like a neglect case, you could see every rib and all her back bone.
shes put on loads of weigh, but needs more muscle now, i think im slightly biased so i thought id ask here. do you think she looks ok, or if you saw her out would you think id been neglecting her?

I think she looks alright, you are quite right she needs some muscle building but your second smaller photo shows her in a better light, she doesn't have the characteristics of a neglected animal so personally if I saw you out and about with her I wouldn't think she is neglected.

You have done well to bring her on.

she looks typical tb and yes a bit ribby and not muscled up, not carrying much top line - but then I am used to cobs.

you would see a lot like this in racing - she doesn't look 'poor' just not blooming.

hopefully come spring with the grass she will get a bit more on her and go into the winter better.

thanks:)
i was a bit worried about her as she didnt seem to put any weight on untill about august, i was hopeing the spring grass would come on she would pile it on, but it didnt happen, hopefully next year she will get fat.
my other horse came to me thin and piled it on within a month, now she looks permently pregnant and is hard to get weight off:rolleyes:
she looks a bit lacking in muscle in the wither area in these pics as i stopped riding for 6 weeks because of an injury.

I think she is on her way! She needs to to muscle up now! ;) Well done for getting her this far!

I think she looks ok, personally i think she needs to build up her muscles and have a bit more fat on her. But thats only my opinion, your better off finding someone's opinion that knows a bit more about horses. Don't really know that much. :)

I personally like chubbier horses:) Mad i know. :D

if you notice she tends to carry the weight lower, shes had 3 foals so i think thats what its from.
she will always be a light horse as shes a tb, but i think shes quite light for a national hunt racer, tho she does have a fairly built front end.

Oh right. I didn't realise she was a Thoroughbred (TB) :)

She's had 3 foals. Wow, i bet they were cute :D :p

yea, she was a racehorse.
she was retired from racing as she pulled a tendon and was used as a broodmare at a racing stud.
ive met one of her foals, he was 17.2 at 2 yrs old:eek:
oh, and shes 15, if that effects anybodies view of her, lol.

She does tend to look a typical TB shape. I know someone with a TB and they now ride in a Fitform treeless saddle, and the horse has a lot better looking topline now. May not work for all horses though.

she already has a treeless saddle, an ansur konklusion. it really got her back muscles up by her withers, nad they wernt really that bad anyway. shes has huge withers tho, bigger than most of the tbs ive seen and ive worked mainly with x racers and racehorses.

She does look a little poor, id hack with a large saddle cloth or exercise sheet, that way people cant make bitter comments or have wrongfull thinking thoughts, when you are trying so hard, and more than conscientious of her appearence, and ive got one or i did have one just like yours she was awfull when i first got her a lot WORSE, ive been feeding her top line conditioning course mix, sugerbeet, mollichaff extra, garlic, seaweed, codliver oil, now for 11 months and she now looks amazing, i fed her all through the summer twice a day, and i shall carry on feeding her 12 months of the year twice a day, to keep her spot on, the other thing that might be an idea is to have a worm count done, as previous owners will tell you theyre wormed and vacinated to date , but you have a card for jabs, you dont have a proof of a worming programme that might not have been.

I bought my TB end of September in poor condition and have been struggling to maintain his weight too.

Just bought a bag of Top Spec - my OH almost fell off his chair when I told him how much it cost

I worry too that people may think he's a neglect case - strangers don't realise the stress and effort you are putting in!

Good luck with her :) She doesn't look neglected.

i was given her by my x boss, i know she wormed but she didnt vaccinate, ive got her passport aswell and it doesnt look like the stud vaccinated her either, but they were going to shoot her so i would be very suprised if they wormed her.
were getting worm counts done on all 4 of them soon. she doesnt actually look too bad with tack on, i passed somebody on a hack who used to compete one of my x bosses horses and she commented on how well she looked, she knowes me tho as she used to teach me and my sister and she saw my other horse get condition.
the muscles will come soon as we can only walk for a good while as im healing, im going to try a bit of distance riding next season and were going to school to hopefully try some jumping and veteran classes.

dont think she looks bad at all!!! all TBs lose a bit of weight, some more than others, i know my boy loses a lot of weight in winter no matter what i feed him!!!

She looks a tiny bit skinny but not neglected. She looks quite perky in the ears and eyes. Neglected horses tend to have sunken eyes and are oblivious of things around them. Her age may make it harder to tone her up but you'll do fine.
