Rhi is on coughless but she has never had the runny nose thing. it could be that working or your horse may just have picked up a cold

I would think that the runny nose is due to his allergy. When you ride your horse you are working his lungs and therefore loosening up the mucous that is sitting there. You say his cough is looser, does he still cough when you first work him still? If so then that is what the runny nose is from. Even if he's not coughing it is probably still from the same cause.

I put my horse on NAF Respiraze after he had a couple of asthma attacks in the summer.

Then when I worked him he had white watery mucus draining from his nose, especially when he was cooling off on a long rein. Prior to the supplement he had a cough at the start of every work session but no cough or mucus during or after exercise.

I think the supplement helped to clear his chest of mucus (made it watery and easier to expell) but did nothing to combat his allergy.

I recently stabled him on rubber matting and half a bale of fresh shavings every day. He also gets haylage now instead of soaked hay. He has had no cough or mucus since I've done this. It's working out cheaper than the supplements and the vet said his chest is now clear :D

shadow was on respiraze a few months ago but it did nothing but this coff less does seem to be loosening things, he is coughing less and seems happier!!! i have tried everything with him, he has had this cough since he was younger and just gets it from dust in the winter!!! Im hoping that this will do some good, it seems to be doing something!!!

Sounds like COPD to me.

Caused by the spores in the hay.

You should try soaking your hay for 15mins (if you dont already), use shavings or pref hemcore bedding. Feed hay from ground rather than net to allow drainage of the yuck.

My horse always coughs in the winter. Her normal is 5-6 coughs when first working to clear her wind. Any more than that I worry. She had been alright till all this smoke from the oil blast!

oh dear hope all is well there! has the blast effected u much???

Well a bit of an update, his nose isnt running anymore, hasnt for the last 3 days! so thats good news! his cough is getting less and less so thats also good!!! he is getting back to his usual self!!! he is on shavings at the mo and hay fed very near the floor in a net, if it is on the floor he trashes it, he is a very messy hos!!!
I have tried the soaking and he wont eat it, but he is fine in summer with hay and it is very good quality hay!
Think it must be a mixture of dust from bed, hay, stable etc!!!
I do my best to keep him free from dust!!!
I could do with some flippin coff less today!!!

I can't feed hay at anytime of the year dry. One little bit and she's coughing.

They do get used to it. My mare is really messy with hay on the floor to but its the only way with her and has def made a diff!

We haven't been affected too much. Was very smoky but it seems to be clearing. It rained today and no black rain or anything. Sadly now my mare is stuck in with pus in foot!! oh well.

i wouldnt feed hay in a net anywhere near the floor! he could so easily get entangled in it and the injuries wont be pretty :( couldnt you maybe put it in a tub or somehting instead>?

its not so he can get stuck in it,its far enough off the floor for that, and also its a net with very very small holes!
He has been much better, back to his usual fizzy happy self after being on the coff less!!!
I have tried putting it in a tub but he manages to throw the tub around and demolish it!!! I know hes only playing but it gets a bit mad when u buy a new tub every day and have to take out the entire bed!!! i have enough trouble with the water and thats attached to the wall and re fills itself, however it does still manage to be all over the place!!!
He is just a general messy horse, he burries poo and kicks it everywhere!!!
