Hi, I am new to these boards, and I'm from the windy state of Wyoming in the US. I started riding when I was a kid, and have recently picked it back up sort of full time. My husband bought me my first horse, an older bay thoroughbred gelding named Dutch. He's great, a real challenge for me, I'm much more comfortable on my trainer's sorrel gelding named Red. Red is much better trained and much more forgiving.

I wanted to say hello. Hello!

I am also entering a local open show here in January. It will be at an indoor arena at the local community college. I won't be riding my horse, and he and I as a team are not ready for showing, but I'll be riding Red (rode him previously for lessons before I got Dutch). I plan to enter the amatuer hunt seat equitation and hunter under saddle.

Not sure what to expect from my first horse show? Any guidance?

Thanks,

Kristy

Can't help you with the showing question. But it is great to have a rider from Wyoming on this board. Welcome.
I'm in London England but last summer we drove across Wyoming on holiday. Cheyenne, Remount Ranch and the green grass), Medicine Bow, Buffalo (where we went to a rodeo), Sheridan - great saddlery - Cody and the Big Horn Canyon with wild horses. What a great place to ride. And lucky you to have a horse there.

Welcome to the board!

I'm sure you'll do fine at the show. Remember that the goal of a "first show" is just to have a good time and to become familiar with the experience. Don't worry too much about placing just yet. Instead, just plan to be a good sport and learn as much as you can.

I'd love to share pictures of Wyoming! But here is the most important picture, my horse. He loves to follow me around the round pen when I am working with him so its hard to get a picture of his with his head up. He loves his mommy :D

The other picture is me in a lesson with my riding instructor on Red. He is a 15 something hh Quarter horse. He is the one I will be showing.

More to come!

Peace, Kristy

Well, you can put a western saddle on pretty much any horse and go ride. The basic seat position and leg que's are the same. Balance is balance regardless of riding discipline.

But as far as "western specialties", like cutting, reining, team penning, barrel racing, etc. My Dutch is not trained on such things, he's too big really to be good at any of it. Some of my trainer's horses are trained in cutting, reining, etc, the "western specialties" but she has a few that are specifically english type horses. Only one or two though.

It's western country out here, so me being a hunt seat rider, I am a bit out of place.

I live in Cheyenne! I'm glad you came during the summer, its the best time to visit here. The fall and spring are chilly and very windy, and the winters can be really ugly. Summer is my favorite season here :-)
